'83 Puckett GEM 10 sale ended -- real or not?

Before I even got serious thinking about bidding on this Puckett rookie card auction, I knew I should search these boards for tips on GEM grading. What I found wasn't encouraging when the word "fakes" was numerous.

Looking at the centering on that card, it's hard to believe it's a "10". That would lead me to believe it's possibly fake, too. I'm glad I didn't bite on this one. There'll be others...

My advice is to not buy anything in a GEM holder. Stick to psa/sgc/gai/bvg if you want the real thing not altered.

Thanks for the grading services recommendation. Even though you're a GB fan, I'll take your advice. (Go Vikings!!!)

Gemmy wrote, "Memorex" and I had to think about that one for a while -- "Is it real or is it...". Too clever for me this late on a Friday night!

knuckles, is that GEM holder just a top loader with a label stuck over the opening??? Wonder what that costs to have graded! (I don't care to know really...)

    Thanks,

omg. On their website GEM states:

    ADDED:11/30/2004
GEM Grading Services Inc. grades the quality of actual sportscard paper stock.
Providing authentication is challenging and not guaranteed due to improved computerized printing techniques.
Size requirements for sportscards are the standard published size plus or minus 3 mm."

In other words, they can't guarantee their graders can detect fakes or trimmed cards!! What a hoot!

    By the way, hoofhearted??

  • There has been a seller who has been selling This gem 10 puckett rookies on ebay for some time now. They are fake. The are copies of an orginal card. Poor copies at best. If you ask for a scan of the back of one, and you have a real one to compare it to you will see what I am talking about.

    My experience with GEM

'81 Pawtucket Wade Boggs, GEM 10 > fake
'83 Topps Wade Boggs, GEM 10 > trimmed
'84 Pawtucket Roger Clemens GEM 10 > fake
'85 Topps Tiffany Roger Clemens GEM 10 > BGS 8.5 (hey, it's REAL!)

Never again. I only stick with the big four these days.
