hand-cut cards

Does anyone have any advice for precision-cutting those hand-cut cards (example: the 1960s Post Cereal cards)? I have one that's cut outside the borders all around (though close in places), but it's a little irregular in places. Is there any way, besides just trying to use a paper cutter and doing the best i can, of getting it cut STRAIGHT and close to the borders? Does Kinkos, or some other place like this offer any kind of precision-cutting service?

I"d do it with a thick metal straight edge and an exacto knife, changing the blade every card. I would not use a paper cutter due to the card traveling as the blade comes down. Print shops will have high quality paper cutters, but it's like hunting ducks with a bazooka.

The local walmart photo lab here has a great heavy duty slider cutter.. which is what I use to cut my signature cut cards with..

That is sound advice on the metal ruler - I was just thinking about it and another fear I would have is the card slipping under the ruler as you run the exacto knife thru it.

Thought - place the card on a small board - position the metal ruler - take 2 small "C" clamps - place them on opposite sides of the ruler with the card in between and tighten it so that you don't feel the ruler slip - then make the cut.

You should ask jodi-mo what he uses.

My thoughts on trimming those cereal/jello cards, etc. Don't do it. The cards are lucky to have survived this long. Why take a chance on damaging it??

I just looked at the few PSA Set Registry entries. Unfortunately none had pics to show how their cards are cut... I've got some of the '61 and '62 Posts, but they're in well-enjoyed condition:

  • If you are going to use a metal straight edge, try to get one with a cork backing on the straight edge. I use to make balsa and bass wood models, and the straight edge is less likely to slip with the cork back.
