The is the last coin I need for my 20th century silver type set, I've seen some very nice ones around but I wanted to get the opinion of the forum as to the colors here

Thanks in advance

Actually that's not that bad, i usually really hate that kinda toning, but somehow it kinda goes with the wreath there, the reverse i do like. The obverse... yeuk.

Must confess though you never see coins toned like that in England, must be something to do with how you guys store them.

The ultimate question is does it complement/fit in the rest of your set?

Good point, it wouldn't fit at all!

  • This one would match my set very nicely though

    Very nice

Now if we could just have a quick whip round for $300

I like 'em both, DrJ ... but my preference is definitely for the toned example. The reverse is especially nice. The obverse ... not so much.
I agree though ... go for one that "fits" with the rest of your set.

The first one for me but if one matches your set more I'd go for the match if I were you.

    Oh yeah! image

Now that i like, and big time. Does it even have a subtle grey tone? Got a gorgeous smooth silky look to it that's practically dropping off of George's forehead there. That one is clearly for me at anyrate, the stunner of the two. I don't even like wreath crowns all that much, but i'd happily take that one home.

    Grab it whilst you can!

I like the coin and the color for what it's worth. Man, you've got guts posting the actual auction you're looking to possibly bid on. I did that once and the item got tons of bids from people in the forum that it drove the price over what I could pay image
  • SylvestiusSylvestius Posts: 1,584
Don't worry i won't be bidding on that second one! As much as i like it, it wouldn't go well with my hammered collection! image

I am always nervous about posting auctions, either because I may bid or it may be owned by a forum member! I have no intention of bidding on the toned example though

  • I personally like the second one more.

when ever I post about a coin in an auction I edit the photo to take off the little eBay logo and just hope no one spends the time to actually hunt the coin down by date and type lol

You guys do know that the seller of coin #1 is a member that posts on the PCGS forums. As far as the color showing on the coin, I will reserve comment.

One of these days I might get my 27 crown slabbed - I have thought about it several times. Right now it's quite happy in its airtite. image

This may be a first - I agree 100% with what Silvestius has posted to this thread. image

I felt the same way about the obverse. There's too much corroding going on for my liking.

I don't care if it's in a slab, it looks AT to me:

I like this one, but for $300, I want it in a slab to ensure it's not cleaned:

Yeah, verily. The seller is most certainly "controversial" with regards to the colors on his coins.

PS: IMHO, that particular coin is most likely AT.

Jester and Steve, you are both of the opinion that the toning on coin #1 is (most likely) AT. But shouldn't the TPG have bodybagged the coin if so?
Or does it happen sometimes, that they slab coins with questionable toning?

I like the toning of #1, especially the reverse image

Yes! The thing with TPGs is they are the one's who decide if the toning is questionable and you have no recourse if you disagree. I have had coins BBed for 'questionable toning' when I know for a fact it was not. It is very possible to have a coin BBed for AT, only to have the coin slabbed by the same company if it is resubmitted. It is all a game to make more money. One of the things I really like about ICG is they only charge $5 if a coin is bodybagged, PCGS and NGC charge the full amount and you are SOL.

    Thanks, Don image

I've got still a lot to learn about TPG's and US-grading. It's a bad thing, that the major TPG's charge the full amount for bodybagging coins.

Hey, what does "SOL" mean? image

I dunno why but i find colourfully toned coins that are AT far more attractive than colourfully toned coins that are NT. I can't tell the different, but whenever i actually like the look of one it always, always turns out to be AT. I guess they just look neater, coloured in inside the lines.

The obverse is a bit mottled for my taste, but I really like the reverse.

The seller, Dick Abrahams, is "MrD" on the forums.

The second one - from jeffone - is probably not cleaned. I have done several deals with Jeff and I always get coins that are MUCH nicer than his pix. You do pay a stiff price for the coins, but they will always be very PQ coins.

I also agree with the majority here - the second coin is the nicer of the two, even beyond my bias for the seller image

The obverse photo on coin #1 leads me to believe it's not AT, but I do have my questions about whether that seller's pics are an accurate representation of a coin's look. If you trust seller #2 more, then it seems you know what to do. Besides, coin #1 is already bid up to $300, anyway.

To be fair, even though I don't like the toned example of the 1927 crown, I have done business with the seller in question. It was an untoned BU Gothic Florin - and I like the coin very much.
