Post protest

Aethelred has become defacto one of the leaders of the darkside forum. His posts are both informative and interesting and he does not deserve the kind of gratuitous and specious lightside style posting (whitelighnin and spiffy 469) that his thread has received.

This is exactly the kind of thing that is begining to turn me off of this forum-it has become infected with both Lightside and open forum mentality that does not have a place here.image

Do not be afraid of expressing your displeasure or this forum is headed downhill, full tilt! Where we were two years ago, we are not remotely near now. The only Brightside (original darkside posters) is the addition of ancients collectors who are equally informed as to their interests as the Darkside used to be.

This forum must not become infected with the mindlessness that seems to pervade much of what passes for intelligent contributions to the PCGS forums. Stand up and be counted Darksiders!image

    I agree with you, Laurent.

Of course, the giveaway in the thread sort of invites this activity.

Wybrit, you jest, surely? When did a giveaway on the Darkside ever turn into this kind of childish mish-mash?

Direct quote from the first post of the thread:

I am not going to tell anyone when I will be back, but when I get home I will check this thread. The last person who has posted when I check it will win a SILVER CROWN from somewhere in the world!

What other conclusion can one draw?

What other conclusion can one draw? Seven pages to a post in a relatively few hours from basically two people????????

I don't know if I dare draw conclusions... I stand by my original comment.

Dr J, no, don't stop posting, you always contribute well.

If Ye Olde Dead King had simply stipulated that a grain, a kernel, an iota of intelligent numismatic information must be included in each post, it would chase away the "post chokers" that almost deliberately keep other people from participating in his giveaway.

  • I tell ya what Lauren, i'll not post to the thread anymore....GODFORBID i did so without asking your permission first........

In fact, i think i'll just let you go ahead and dictate to the rest of the members here how you want this forum to be run, it seems like you are on a pretty good roll of doing that lately......

I was trying to win the coin because i ACTUALLY LIKE shiilings......but you go ahead, run a few more posters off this forum and you'll have what you used to have......

    hey laurentyvan

why are you upset with me??? I logged off last night and there were 150 posts on that thread
I logged back in this morning and there are now over 700!! Its not like I'm big on this kind of post. I only have a post count of around 1200 and average less than half a post a day. I was posting to the thread cause I was actually interested in the coin. But since all of a sudden you are the policeman for the forum I will go back to lurking on the World and Ancient coin forum.
I collect some darkside and am not very knowledgable about it (which is why i frequent this forum, TO LEARN) but If you are gonna get all upset and such I can learn as a Lurker

I've gotta say Æthelred left himself wide open for this one when he stated 'last person to have posted', a qualification on that would have been nice. Last person to have posted say a 500 word numismatically educational post (and not one pinched from another site), would have scaled things down a little. Quality should never be sacraficed for quantity.

Well that's just my two groats anyhow.

As a lightside born and bred ... guess this means that I am also no longer welcome here ... or am I mistaken in the interpretation that the jist of this is supposed to be a proposal for an elitist message board for the use of the darkside old farts club ...

Please pardon me for taking slightly more than a passing interest in YOUR coins ... guess I will go back to the lightside for a while ...

I haven't read the giveaway thread yet, because I rarely even open such threads. So I don't know what transpired there.

But I must step up in defense of Laurentyvan, an astute gentleman of impeccable tastes. He's not a policeman, nor is he trying to be. He is trying to make a stand to improve the collecting experience in general, and specifically to impart a sense of decency and fun to this forum, which he rightly feels has been lacking of late. Let's not turn this into a battleground, please. Let's be civil and fair and open and fun-loving people like i know the vast majority of those who frequent, or used to frequent this forum are.

I dont mind seeing people posting in an attempt to win a coin as I have done it myself on other forums. And everyone states that they are just trying to win the coin, but if you look at the thread, you will see some people posting 2 or 3 times in a row. To me posting 3 times in a row is hard to justify that your attempting to be the last poster, it makes it just look like your increasing your post count.

Well being in the UK i started on UK coins back in 1990, mostly from change, i was 6 at the time. Then in about 2000 i began to turn to serious collecting. I think you could say 2001 was the year i started proper with a real attempt to focus and absorb as much knowledge on it as possible, i was doing this whilst studying for a degree in history. So coins were a natural progression fr me of being able to get as close to history as possible.

I'll let you work out how old i am, since i'm so bad at numeracy. image

So when it comes to darkside ... you are an old fart when comparted to the relative length of time that I have been toying around with such material ... even tho' I acquired some of my first darkside coins in the mid 1970s at around the same time I started playing with lightside ... long before I decided to pursue things on a slightly higher level.

Well we're all still learning. There's tons of stuff that surprises me everyday to find out, having just read a fascinating article on medieval esterlings of the Low Countries, which are imitation issues of Edward I pennies issued in the later 13th century, early 14th century. There were about 9 million pennies minted in England in that time period, there were about 19 million imitation pieces minted (if i recall correctly, well it was alot), so they are more common than the real thing. Or at least they were depending upon where they went. Since alot were minted in Flanders for the cloth trade with England alot probably made it into the English ports. Due to English coinage laws they would have mostly all been melted down and subsequently coined into English issues.

See fascinating stuff turns up all the time in this hobby.

IMHO the "last one to post wins a coin" post was fun, in a light and pointless manner. Anyone disliking the direction that thread took could have done what I did most of the time, that is, ignore it. I like this place best when members aren't judgmental of how others post, as long as we are supportive of each other and the hobby in general. I value the assistance I get here, and want the broadest possible group to learn from.

Playing games is fine but just keep it to the Open Forum. I do not see a place for it here.

I think it is also important to make all people welcome here if they are interested in discussing "world and ancient coins." There are many people here who collect both world and US coins, myself included.

It has been rather nice here over the years because people generally stick to the topic at hand and behave in a civil manner. That's all we need really. Stay on topic and be nice. If these guidelines are not followed, we may need the moderators to check up on things from time to time, if they are not already. I truly hope it does not come to that but the way things are going, it could.
