Does any one know who the American Indian was that appears on the $2.50 & 5.00 gold piece ?

Just wondering if it was an actual person or a "made up" portrait.

I believe he was an actual person but I forget his name.

Like the buffalo nickel, he was probably a composite of several models.

  • I dunno, but I bet they were underpaid image it still baffles me - the treatment they endured while being depicted as Liberty herself. Only in America image
Like women - chosen to represent the ideals of liberty/freedom but still earning less etc etc.

Breen said the model was unknown, but several references say it was a composite of several photos of "healthy indian warriors". Here's more of the story.

  • I actually remember this being on a Discovery Channel program. It was of a well-known Native American that the US Cavalry had in custody. Of course, I forget who it was.

I don't think Pratt's Indian model for the coins was named, but I believe the Indian on the old $5 silver certificates was Running Antelope.

  • LordMarcovan is probably right. The way I remember the program, the “money” that the Native American posed for wasn’t specified.

I have a pornographic memory, but it doesn’t all come back to me at once.

Edited to say: See what I mean about my memory not coming back all at once? It was The History Channel, not The Discovery Channel.

I wish I can remember that Native American’s name. Running Antelope may have posed for some currency, but the one who posed for a coin was shot and killed while in the Army’s custody.

The History Channel is notoriously incorrect. Not generally very good source for reality.
