Grandmother's estate: so-called dollar

My mom gave my 5-year old daughter this "coin" to play with:

I'm afraid to say I stole [ahem... "borrowed"] the medal from my daughter once I found out what it was. It's in really bad shape, but I want to doctor [ahem... "curate"] the old piece so it looks better in my daughter's collection of odds and ends.

Any suggestions for getting the green death off it it?

You may try soaking in olive oil, but it appears to be beyond help.

Pretty neat souvenir... I think these were struck right at the Fair by a press the Mint had brought along.

MacCrimmon suggested this in an old thread, but I've never tried it:

"I recently removed some 'green nasties' from a British copper (nice gEF), but it was done soaking it in xylene. About 20-30 q-tips at the rims and cotton puffs (lightly blotting) were turned completely green and black, and the active green is no more. The harder black verdigris/corrosion areas were helped somewhat but obviously not completely."

These are pretty common and if you are looking for a nice example, you can find them on ebay all the time.

When looking for xylene on the web, I came across dimethylbenzenes and ethylbenzene. Is there a commerical name for xylene at a hardware store?

Goof-Off contains xylene. Xylene is nasty stuff. Here's an MSDS for xylene.

Will it take the pin striping tape off my car, too? I haven't found anything that will do it without damaging the paint. image

    Here's one

There aren't many right now, but keep looking. They are usually much nicer than yours. My local dealer may even have a couple if you want me to look.

tmot99---This medal belonged to his grandmother so I'm sure it has sentimental value which is why he's trying to curate it.

Doesn't look too much worse than acetone. IMO.

    Yea, verily.

And I'm also trying to figure out where she got it. She wasn't born until 1908 (in California), and her parents didn't arrive in the US until 1893. I seriously doubt they made a beeline all the way across the country to attend to Expo.
