GOETZ: K-15 Bavarian Kingdom Centenary

K-15 BAVARIAN KINGDOM CENTENARY, Commemorative medal, 1906, Cast AE, 73mm, Wt. 126.5g, UNC, RR.

To commemorate the 100th year of the founding of the kingdom of Bavaria in 1806.

Obverse: Prince Reagent Luitpold bust ¾ left in court dress with inscribed name on left legend.

Reverse: Crown on oak, tablets bear names of Kings Maximilian I to Otto, Luitpold family branch at 2 o’clock.

    The detail in the hair of Luitpold is outstanding. One can see single hairs on his head! Scott, does this photo capture the true color of this medal? I miss the wonderful warm brown usually seen in your medal pics.

    There is little 'dark' patination on this piece and if anything, it is slightly more olive green in reality. The entire piece is covered in a velvety matte patina which I have several other early pieces in too. I think Goetz may have been experimenting with different patination techniques, materials, and recipes at the time as he had been in Munich for only a short time when this was made.
