Alert: Automatically Actively Avoid All amazing_alan's Awful Auctions

(Alliteration Agony, eh?)

The other day I received a 113 card lot of Kirby Puckett cards from an auction from "amazing_alan". In the auction he said:

"All the cards are in NEAR MINT – MINT condition and are PSA quality gradeable."

Inspecting the cards, I found 30 of them which had at least one soft corner, surface damage, etc. He had sent some cards unprotected and all were wrapped in one big laundry-cleaning bag in the box. One card, a big 1986 Donruss, was badly bent. Another card had a spot of black goo on the back making it stick to the nice Pinnacle card next to it. Yet another example was a 1989 Bowman which was in a hard protective sleeve and all four corners were soft!

Initially I emailed him to say I found several nice cards to fill holes in my collection and to express my unhappiness with the damaged cards. I said that, granted the cards may be gradeable by PSA, but they won't come back in a high grade. He replied saying that the damaged ones must have been "jostled" in transit. That ticked me off the more I thought about it. I wrote back saying it was NOT the USPS' fault for the damaged cards, but rather his lousy packing and card selection. If he replies again with another lame excuse, I'll pursue this "dispute" with the means available.

Ahhh, it feels good to vent...

Was there indeed a PSA graded card in the lot?

  • Let's castarate him.
  • Yea, misleading for sure. However at less than a dime per card I really don't think you can expect PSA 9s on 113 different cards. Besides, would you really send any of these to PSA even if they were nrmt-mnt?

he lied for sure, but considering you got 113 cards for $4. I really don't think he cares.

I agree with GG on this one. $4 is a small amount and when it comes to lots, you get this crap.

I think we sometimes kid ourselves about ebay. It has inherently higher risk for bad deals, it is not a retail store or show dealer where we can inspect before we buy. That is why ebay is cheaper. I bought my fair share of bad cards on ebay, it is usually limited to the low dollar stuff.

You purchased 113 cards, granted they are '80s semi-star cards - but still, for $4.00? Including a graded card?

And, you are complaining about this?

If anyone has certain modern players that they really like from the 90s e.g. PM me a wantlist of years and card numbers, this summer when I go thru my stuff, I will send you whatever I have - e.g. Cal, Nolan - at no charge - the stuff is just collecting dust!

edit: PS - you will actually be doing me a favor since I have been procrastinating anyway!image

I have to say, I have to side with hoof on this one. Regardless of what you paid, if you expect a certain product, because you are told you will receive a certain product, shouldn't you be entitled to receive what you were promised? Yes, he got 113 cards for $4, yes, that's about 3.5 cents per card but is that really the point? If most of the cards were good, I'd still chalk it up to experience and concede that it was still a decent deal. The thing is though, I'd still be ticked that I got a bunch of crappy cards that were described as near mint.

If I bought a 113 count lot of 1960 Topps Baseball and managed to win them for $1/card and they were listed as all PSA gradeable and they arrived with more than a quarter of them in horrible condition I'd be PO'd. Even if I did get them for a deal. I dunno...maybe it's just me.

    Stone-you have a pm.

If the cards were not trimmed or otherwise altered and legitimate then they are all PSA gradable.

And, not to make a big issue of this, but NM-MT (as the seller advertised) is a PSA 8. Sounds like you got a bunch of cards that would 8 - and not the 9's and 10's you thought you were getting for your $4.00.

It probably cost more to ship those cards than he made, anyway.

ct, you're right in that I wasn't expecting much in this lot as far as value goes. I feel that I definitely got my 10 bucks worth ($6 s/h).

I wasn't upset at all when I initially emailed him. I wanted to provide some constructive criticism. It was his reply that got my goat.

The PSA card was 9 (1/1!! yuck yuck) of a 1996 Select Team Nucleus card, one I didn't have yet, so, again, I'm happy overall with what I got. My young nephew back in Minnesota, who just started collecting, is going to be getting the cards I didn't need, so they won't be wasted!

Thanks for all of your feedback! It just felt good to vent. It falls on deaf ears around the house -- except for my son's cat, he loves the attention and will listen for a little while.

Now it's time to add the 9 '62Ts I got today to my Registry Set...that'll take my mind off any "problems" I have!!

Considering the cost of grading, I think ya did great by getting a PSA 9 card! Ya never know what ya gonna find in one of these lots - actually, I could (but won't take the time) make up some nice lots of players that people would be happy with - if they don't mind cards from the 90's - if I throw in 80's - I can promise OC's and soft corners since that's the way they come out of vending in many cases.

  • Hey!! its good to vent. but unless you getting a great scan of the card you almost can never really expect to get NRMT-MT cards of HOF players for under a nickel each.

chalk it up as a cheap lesson.

    better luck next time!!
