Questions on PSA Cert #s

Seeing and reading about covering up the Ceritification Numbers on graded cards, what is the reason for that?

I'm sure I know the answer to this next question, but does the "Validation" process (when you add a card to a registered set) verify that no one else has the same number? That should be part of the validation process, but I've never heard for sure...

Thanks,

hh

Could be for safety, too, especially on high dollar items. Insuring that no scammers try to use the cert number in a scam to sell fake cards, or worse, to use the scan and sell a phantom card they don't even own.

I liken it to how they cover license plate numbers on TV, etc.

    HH,

Some set participants like to cover the cert # when they scan their cards to deter image theft. I guess some less scrupulous individuals will steal scans and list them on the bay to rip people off.

The validate button is used to make your set additionals viewable to all. If a card is still in another persons set (say the guy you bought it from) you will be notified when you attempt to add it to your set.

Every cert# is unique. Two people cannot own the same card or have the same cert#. This is why PSA will not allow you to add the card if it is still in the previous owners set.

    Hope that helped, Bob

Exactly. I like to show the cards in my PSA sets, but more than once I discovered that one of my big-ticket cards was on eBay, swiped by a scammer who I presume was trolling these boards and the registry. So recently I started covering the cert. number in the scans for my HOF Rookies and 500 HR Club sets. They could still steal the scan, but they'd have to make up a number to PhotoShop onto the image, and the number wouldn't check out. The scammers know this, thus will not steal my scans for their nefarious enterprises.
