2005 Mint Sets -Amazing Quality

2005 mint sets arrived at my door Friday- I have had a chance to look at some of the coins . The quality is amazing. I predict MS70 grades will not be unheard of for state 25c , Kennedy 50c and probably the others as well. MS69's will bring little premium. The coins are matte proof - like, fully struck and carefully handled post-strike. The main problem I see has plagued mint set coins for the past 37 years - the equipment used by the mint to package the coins can leave a series of deep paralell striations on the high point of the coins. This shows up mostly on the rim of the coins, but can also affect Washington's cheek making the coin numismatically worthless.

  • That's good to hear.

What do the Sac's look like?

The Sacs are mark-free, and less proof-like than in prior years. As in prior years, many if not all have striations from packaging machine on the edge of the reverse. PCGS has mostly ignored these in the past, as they were present on mint set coins in past years and I have made several MS68's from mint set coins.

This seems like good news for us Roosey collectors. Now to see how PCGS will grade them SMS or Not

I must have gotton a bad batch. The coins appear very nice until you completely rotate them in a good light. There are minute luster breaks and scratches on high points. The CA Ps look great on the obverse but the arm of Muir will keep many coins out of the 68 and 69 grade. You Roosevelt collectors check the cuts that are hidden very well in the hair. Sac Ds are not looking good for small cuts on the face and hair. A very high percentage of Kansas Ps are cut on the obverse. The P mint coins are again much better than the D mint as in past years. I will say that when you find an exceptional coin, it really, really looks good. A few will be very high MS69s but I'll hold my breath about an MS70 from PCGS.

Holy Cow- not SMS--I never thought of that- I just got mine and the coins are beautiful. One coin had a "booger" on it but the others were sweet. I collect Jeffersons and had just bought a MS64 Bison and when I saw the Unc set I was thinking the MS64 will be worthless when people start getting ms66 and ms67's out of the Unc sets. I guess time will tell---Don/mademan

CA P's and the KS P's quarters were all garbage in my sets. Huge scratches. P's all in all are better than D's this year. The lincolns were amazing. an MS70 this year??

Mine look very clean and the SAC's are outstanding in my eyes. Some very nice coins.

  • Hello Everyone - I've watched for a while, but this is my first post.

I agree that these coins are absolutely amazing! The Satin Finish prevents a lot of hairline type marks from killing a good coin. The high points - especially John Muir's arm like D.M. says - are very vulnerable to the "machine". The US MINT did a great job with the finish, but they (quarters) honestly look a lot like the premium 2004 D quarters do. I don't see a new designation. I looked at my '04D 68 quarters to compare and they were matte just the same. I wouldn't be surprised if Denver tested the Satin dies idea with the 2004's...

    Welcome CoinFame!

I'm still waiting on mine...image I ordered them at 2 pm on the 31st....? Hopefully they
    will get here soon!image

  • Thanks for the welcome Gandyjai. :^)

You could actually order at 2pm est? The website was jammed pretty bad. Even with 640/320, I had to work hard to get in to look. Good job on getting in the site.

--> My subscription came in Friday afternoon. Not bad since I'm in Fairbanks, Alaska. Last year, they took their sweet time and it was 2-weeks+ for me. How do they pick who to ship first???

    Regards,

I don't know how they pick order of shipping.....I got my proof sets ordered BEFORE noon this year and the
quality was poor!image shipped on 3/17! Probably one of the first ones out, but definitely NOT one of the first strikes.

They probably are so stocked up by the order date that all of the "first strike" ones are buried in the back! That way the
person that orders them a month or so down the line ends up getting them!? (Just guessin')image

Hey Seth, is that not Richard Green's name - CoinFame? he's the top registry guy for Kennedy's and a couple of others sets, I believe. Oh well, if he doesn't care I surely don't. Welcome to the boards anyway.

Welcome, Coinfame, but I believe this is the first year for the satin finish. There was an article in coin world about a month ago when it was announced. At that time know one new what pcgs was going to do! If they indeed decide to put SMS or satin finish on them one can't help but wonder what will happen to the modern sets.

I'm on a subscription plan and have not received mine yet. I hope your theory is true about the first strikes being shipped last, that would mean I'm in for a treat. Fred

Hello Don, thanks and nice to meet you!

I like State Quarters, Sacagawea, and I really LOVE the Westward Journey Nickels. Since I had to start somewhere on the registry, I put together a modest but 100% complete 2004 Mint Set on the registry under the name CoinFame.com. Most Importantly, I have a lot of fun with these national treasures. image
