Primary collection is US NBNs of my 2 home towns....likely to be an open ended, unfinishable collection, even if I find the winning powerball ticket. I've always dabbled a little on the darkside, however, and have a few focussed, active interests (altho there is no rush to complete them):

    1. Papal Medals:
      - At least 1 medal of each pope, 1417 to date. Waiting on Benedicts 1st medal and then it'll be complete again.
      - A silver annual medal for each year of the 20th century. After a purchase of 3 Pius XII medals last evening, I'm down to 2 JP II, 1 Leo XIII and a couple of Sede medals. Thinking about expanding this to the 19th century where I'm about 40% complete already
      - An official gold medal of each pope of the 20th century. Have 3 of the 7.
    2. Latvian currency 1918 to 1940 by serial number block letter. Missing a couple of keys, probably 75% there. Ought to be good for another 5-10 years

    3. Roman folles of the tetrachy (roughly 293-313 AD). I'd like to finish my set of the Carthage mint (about 65% done) and have a handful of "gotta haves" to get the collection where I'd like to have it.

    4. Finishing up my 1921-1923 Westphalia horse tokens. Missing 2 or 3 varieties and want to upgrade 4 or 5 more.

I'm "working" on waaaayyyyy too much stuff ...

    Canada Type Set
    Australia Type Set
    British Victoria Type Set
Papal/Vatican coins (might become a type set someday)
    British pre-Victoria shillings by type
    British florins by type

Darkside coins because I like the design including, of course, some BBL's image

Oh ... and some liteside crap is way back on the "back burner" indefinitely.

My one and only Darkside collection is a "beautiful design" type set. Requirements to be in the set; 1. beautiful design (in my opinion lol), 2. Large coin, 3. From anywhere but U.S., 4. No clad coins, 5. Not modern. So far I have only selected 9 coins to be in the set but am always looking out for more qualified designs image

    So far I have:

    1944 Switzerland 2 Francs
    1939 Cuba 1 Peso (ABC)
    1911 British Trade Dollar
    1905 Phillipino 1 Peso
    1932 Poland 10 Zlotych

    Still need:

    French 5 Francs (Sower)
    Mexican 2 Peso (Libertad)
    Mexican 1 Peso (Caballito)
    Romanian 2 Lei

    "beautiful design"

    Interesting theme!

I'm not sure exactly when you define modern, but would you include the 1951 & after West German standard 5 mark coin? I always have thought that the obverse was an inspired design and have toyed (and so far resisted) with collecting it by date. A related piece is the German Oak Tree 5 mk. The other one that immediately comes to mind is the 1930s French 10/20 Fr. Very deco.....very impressive.

edited to add...and the San Marino 1930s Lire 10, and.......(so many pretty coins, such little time and money!)

I have no hardset definition of "modern". So far the most modern coin in the collection will be the French 5 Franc Sower with the earliest year of 1960. Ideally I'm looking in early 20th Century. As for the German and San Marino coins.....I don't know as I can't offhand remember what they look like lol. I do know I love the art deco look on coinage and I am always looking for new additions image Got any pics of those coins? image
  • I am not really a set kind of person.I just buy whatever floats my boat. However I am sure someday I may find a series so beautiful I will want to complete a set.

Well Clad, most of my stuff is in the bank. I do have a small box with odds and ends - mostly interesting base medal and the odd silver circulated piece. In general I bought these simply because I liked them and they cost me between a dime and a few dollars apiece. After looking thru it I found a circulation stike 1968 5 mk and a circulated 1933 10 Fr. Here's the "good" sides.

    image

I've had the German coin probably 25-30 years. The French coin was just a piece of "junk silver" I saved because I liked the design. Both are well designed and tell you a lot about their countries and their time. These aren't bad, but in high grade they really pop!

Maybe someone else has a nice Oak Tree and San Marino L10 to share.

  • For me, it's type sets

US Registry sets here on PCGS

My Mexican type set (about half of it currently in the hands of ANACS)

    My Canadian type set

And a bunch of misc type coins from every country in the New World - (can't say I really work on these - they just happen)

There is also a quite large collection of Mexican currency - Pre-revolutionary to current issues

Still just bummin' around buying stuff I like. I'll probably streamline my collecting in a few months. I'm having fun just picking up pieces I like. I might start on Peruvian sols. I just bought this one Peruvian Sol. Can't wait to get it in hand.

With the unavailability of nice affordable 19th and early 20th century Greek coins, I've undertaken Switzerland for a while, and I even bought a (Confederation) Dansco type set album for this from lordmarcovan. However, I keep being tempted by super high grade examples in slabs,or raw but too nice to stay like this image ,and so the album stays eternally half empty. image

    Not a great deal at the moment, i've narrowed the focus down considerably lately;

    1) English Anglo-Saxon pennies one of each monarch from 871-1066

Still to get; (i can never remember the dates, here without looking)

    Alfred the Great (871-899)
    Edward the Elder (899-924)
    Edmund (939-???)
    Eadred (940s)
    Eadwig (???-959)
    Eadgar (959-975)
    Edward the Martyr (975-978)
    Æthelred II (978-1016)
    Harold I (1035-1040)
    Harthacnut (1040-1042)
    Edward the Confessor (1042-1066)
    Harold II (1066)

    2) One penny of the monarchs from 1066-1399

    Still to get;

    William I (1066-1087)
    William II (1087-1100)
    Henry I (1100-1135)
    Richard I (1189-1199)
    Edward II (1307-1327)
    Edward III (1327-1377)
    Richard II (1377-1399)

    3) Henry VI Annulet issue (1422-27) type set Noble to Farthing.

Half Noble, Quarter Noble, Groat, Halfgroat, Penny, Halfpenny, Farthing.

    4) Nazi Germany 5 reichspfennigs in UNC/BU.

    1938, 1939, 1941, 1943 & 1944.

That's it, quite a bit but i hope to deal with the Anglo-Saxon and the Henry VI stuff first.

Roman coins by deity is indeed an approach i had considered, hopefully one day i'll get chance to persue that route.

Date set of all Canadian circulating coins from 1858-1967 Very ambitious Ajaan-I'll check on your progress in about 50 years, god willing...image

Type set from France, 18th cent through 20th century. The same from Germany and Great Britain and Italy although with slightly less enthusiasm and interest.

Over 350 countries at last count in my OFEC collection (where are some of those obscure countries?-tough to find sometimes, even with large mintages).

Lightside commem. coins in UNC and Proof, whatever interests me, US type set-Dansko album (almost complete).

Only a dozen or so? Outstanding for a date set-when did you start? I thought this was something of a recent effort on your part...

I've had the large and small cents, along with the 5c nickels for years. I've having trouble locating some of the key dates though.
