Loth y 3 day auction and hi starting bid? wouldn't a 7 or 10 day auction with a .99 cent starting bid get you the best action? That card is NICE. Old style flip too..........good luck
ah...3 days is good man...it would just sit there otherwise....im advertising here arnt I? alot of serisouly collectors patrol the boards...though they dont post...at any rate....they will see it...why wait.....get it during memorial weekend!
Winpitcher is exactly right. I have done many high dollar items, and everytime, I start them at $1.00 and run them 7 days. I almost ALWAYS get more than I expected. My rule is that if I expect an item to go over $500, I automatically "feature" the item as well. It is well worth $19.95 to do that. I guarantee you that you will get your $19.95 back, PLUS SOME! It works everytime for me. Just me 2 cents.
I couldn't agree more on the lower starting price. It's all in a buyers mindset. I've said in an earlier thread that when you start high, you keep people from putting it in their watchlist to begin with. Then there are less buyers around in that last (critical) hour.
That being said, I hope I'm wrong and you get a lot of bids. I wish you luck.
I wish I could bid on that Mantle but I got 57s to buy. Actually that's not quite true, I'm halfway there to buy a 61 Mantle AS PSA 8 and after the June 5 auctions, I should have enough to do so. Then I'll be back looking for the top 4 stars in need for 1957: BRob, FRob, Kuofax and Drysdale.
Ok, so I lied. I sold my 1957 Clemente PSA 6 last Sunday because I didn't like the centering (it looks out of place to my other star cards) and bought this one to replace it. Now I got to save a little more to buy a 61 Mantle AS.
the auction........has been EXTENDED....and FEATURED....lets make this a CASE STUDY...
will Lothars 64 mantle sell for more then he hopes now that its a longer auction and featured??? TOON IN NEXT TIME!!!!!!!!
i had hoped 800.....at least 25 over SMR due to centering and being a HIGH HIGH END 8....when i bought this card 3 years ago the guy had a super small scan and didnt know much about cards..i think he was into someting else but came across a collector in Cali who had a bunch of mantles...he was also sellign a 63 8 and so forth...prolly just as nice...when i got it my jaw dropped....
then i got into set collecting... realized id never do the 64 set...never do a mantle set...and figured id get a 6 later sometime down the road....im used to 6'sand 7's now with my psa 5-7 56/57 sets.....heck i even like 5's now...no need for a expensive 8....i have many star cards from other sets in 5's....its all about how bad a card you can tolerate..and if a 5 makes ya smile as much as an 8...and it does for me...let someone who must have the 8 have it. Thats my philosophy and why im selling such a FINE FINE CARD (beginning to itch and starting to get hives).
<< <i>heck i even like 5's now...no need for a expensive 8 >>
For the older cards of super stars like that, I would have to agree with you. But it all depends on the card...I have seen some really nice 5s, and seen some horrible ones.
And you're right, if you aren't a Mantle collector or a collector of this set, why not sell it and apply the money where it will be better felt?
Lothar, real smart move that you extended the auction. My jaw dropped too when I saw ya list at 3 days ending Sunday on Memorial day weekend when all your bidders are out pounding beers and BBQ ... for a second I thought I was gonna be running down your driveway with a ski mask on!!!
From an investment perspective, I'm curious as to how much the card appreciated when you first bought it to what it's worth today? What might the future appreciation of the card be if it was held for say 10 more years?
If I bought this card, I think my wife would divorce me then I'd be paying a great deal more money than what I paid for the card. Haha!

I had hoped that when i bought it that due to centering and how wondering it was...that it would go OVER smr...
i paid over smr...lets see if indeed I was right...that gorgeous vintage is worth much more then SMR.
