I took the plunge...

...and bought the 84 fleer update set from bbcexchange for $350.

I trust his judgement on cards, and he says they are in great condition...saw the scan of the box (which are really usually beat up) and it looked pristine, and said the clemens and pucket should garners 9s. Even at 8s I feel I got a good deal.

Thoughts on this? I've been wanting to buy this set for awhile (hell, back to when gooden was the hot card in it), and think $350 for this set is a great value.

its always a risk..i remember when 9's in 84 fleer update were UNHEARD OF....in fact i got an old SMR from back in 2000 where a guy complains about sending in over 100 he thought would get a 9..and they got a 8...

HOWEVER...indeed this is a rare SET...and if you get 9's..which is possible.....you can make a profit or have one waiting for the future.

if you get 8's id say you break even and it might be worth it to have the set for your personal collection.

haha yeah I must be...but this set (for different players) has always been important to the hobby, and just felt this was the perfect opportunity.

I remember wanting this set when Doc was the man, and this set was like way out there in price...now the Clemens (and somewhat Puckett) have made it important.

I didn't say I was going to get the whole set graded (just the Clemens and Puckett...maybe the Gooden for history) But I will definitely put it on display in a Roop binder.

I think that's a good deal. I have some of the key cards out of that set. I have the McReynolds (was really hot a while back), Gooden, Langston, Puckett and the Clemens in a <cough>GAI 9.5 holder<cough>

Never thought about sending in the other cards. They are all nice though. That is a great set and those cards are tough to come by in really nice condition.

Seems to me that the $350 is well worth it. Upside outweighs the downside.

    Congratulations Ax
Good luck on the grading...it's one of the sets that I never go around to buying - please give us a scan of the keys when you get it.

I like the pickup - if I had seen it, I might have bought it first! image

Good luck on the grading, if the Clemens garners a 9 - your set is paid for.

One year ago I bought an '84 Fleer Update set on eBay for just over $200 from a private collector I didn't know from Adam. I was sure Rocket would come back trimmed or an 8 because the price was so good. But the result was Clemens PSA 9, Puckett PSA 9, Rose PSA 9, Gooden PSA 8, Seaver PSA 9. One of the highlights of my second life as a collector.

I still have the graded Clemens, Kirby, Seaver, and the rest of the set in its box.
