How is everyone doing on their sets?

Im doing okay on my Eddie Murray and Will Clark sets. Picking up a handful each month. Cant wait until everything gets added to the registries that isnt already listed. My completion % should go up quite a bit.

I requested a Bake McBride set some time ago, bringing the total number of requests for that set to probably 1. It's on the list right under Nap Lajoie, which is fitting, I think. I'm thinking I should send in a spreadsheet as that seems to help speed things up. I've got a Showcase set, but I'd like it better on the regular registry so I can be eligible for an award, which I would then have slabbed and included in the registry.
    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay
  • I am doing pretty good on my Wade Boggs and Bo Jackson sets. I wish there were a few more Bo Jacksons out on the market; but, 4 Sharp Corners keeps me well supplied with Wade Boggs cards. If anything, there are more Wade Boggs cards out there than I can afford to buy. Like you, plasticman, I can't wait to PSA gets all my addition requests added. My adventure into player sets after completing my 1971 Topps monster has been a lot of fun.

I am running into some difficulties with finding graded cards for the wade boggs basic set. The master set is way too large and holds no appeal to me...so I search through the offerings every few days for new items.

I've been looking for a 1985 topps Boggs in 9 for months...and I have yet to find one.

I'm still waiting on around 30 cards to be added to my Dan Marino basic and Master sets. I've been submitting a lot of my own cards and have done fairly well. My other source has been 4SC, from whom I have bought 40 to 50 cards over the last 2 months. I can't pass up the $3 and $5 PSA 9 and 10 Marino graded cards.

I'm desperately trying to get to 65% completed by May 31st.

I'm doing pretty well on my Mike Schmidt set. Actually sort of getting to the point where there is not much else for me to do. Obviously, there will always be upgrades. But if I stopped today - I would be really happy with where my set is and not worry about what 'could have been'. I've spent thousands of dollars, gone through hundreds of submissions and am pretty darn sure that I have one of the highest-grade and most comprehensive run of Schmidt cards out there. Fun for me. I'm working more on other endeavours right now. But I like looking at the Schmidt stuff, for sure!

My Nolan Ryan set is the Old Faithful of my collection. I get distracted (most recently by Heritage), but I still always manage to pick up at least one or two Ryan every month. The market is so bad for Ryans right now though (if you're a seller that is - great if you're a buyer- see my post on the NR thread). I should probably be taking advantage of the low prices right now, but there is so much shiny stuff out there!

  • My Trammell set is well behind Jim's but I still pick up cards here and there. I've discovered that I like rifling through big lots for high grade cards to submit myself more than I like eBay finds and have been focused more on that. I also find that I enjoy being sidetracked by other card interests along the way.

My progress has been slowed somewhat by living in Japan for almost the last year now. But I'll be returning to the states in September and hope to put a submission together shortly thereafter.

  • After much thought, I have decided to sell my sets (all are player sets) to help fund other pursuits. My collection includes basic and master sets of Mike Schmidt, Orlando Cepeda, and Tony Dorsett. I am planning on putting the Schmidt Master set (400+ cards) on eBay as a whole, while breaking up the smaller player sets. I will be updating my sets on the registry tomorrow to include any additions or upgrades I've neglected to do. My sets all have "Dartonxx75" in the collection name. If you are interested in the complete Schmidt set or any of the cards in my other player sets, you can reach me via e-mail at this address dartonxx75@comcast.net. Thanks.

I've been getting burned out for the past couple of months. I really need to quit playing around and get these complete or at least get the 79T in a PSA 8. It's really sad not to have the "key" card.
4SC's is a great source but watching the BIN drop week after week gets a little old along with paying half the cards price for SH. Then when you finally get your PSA 9 a PSA 10 pops up two weeks later for the same price.

What really burns me is the hard to find "RARE" insert/promo card that PSA has graded only one issue of. The owner of the card puts it on Ebay for a BIN of $100. 1990 Topps TV Cardinals team set.
    The other thorns:
    1989 SI for kids
    1987 Topps Stickers Hardback Test
    1993 Pinnacle Cooperstown Duffex
1996 Select Certified Mirror Red, Blue, Gold, Icy Blue, Ruby Red, Sapphire ETC ETC

    It's still fun though, right?

Really? Im finding gobs of the base issue Murray in 9. Ive got 2-3 already myself even. 10s seem pretty tricky for that year.

Halosfan - nice avatar image What sets are you working on? I had considered doing an Erstad one but with the zillions of post 1999 cards he has Im kinda scared. Im having a tough enough time keeping up with my raw collection on his cards. I did just snag a nice Game Bat from when he was playing in the Cape Cod League.

MS - your schmidt collection is awesome. Kudos on that. Its nice to hear you are satisfied and have enjoyed the 'chase'. That 'chase' keeps me going knowing that I really enjoy collecting for the right reasons.

Dartonxx75 - whats got your attention now?

bengineno9 - right on. Patience is key and also have a subscription to the online Pop Report. I check that and keep track of new 'pops' so I can tell who is grading what so I dont get stuck with a 9 when Id really enjoy the 10 that comes along coincidentally right after haha image

boggs - seems like alot of you guys collecting the Wades! Always checking for you guys to see how the collections are doing.

    Boggs-

If you end up with any of the Boggs basics for sale that I need, shoot me a PM.
  • Are there any resident '85 Topps experts who can comment on whether there are some cards that are just plain tough to find good copies of? Another player besides Boggs I've noticed there aren't many high-grade examples for is Tom Seaver (2 9s, 0 10s). Seaver's final few years of cards appear to have been submitted fairly regularly, making me scratch my head a little on this one. By contrast (and possibly also by luck), I was able to pluck the best Alan Trammell out of a group of about 20-25 copies and get a 9.

Edited to contain some content. Helps to type some text before you post...

I will still be working on my midgrade raw sets. They are really fun to build and will put less strain on my finances. After selling my sets, I'm sure I'll splurge on a couple stars for my raw 1960 Topps set (Mantle for sure). Anyway, good luck to all the player set collectors. I know I'll still keep an eye on how Marc and the others are progressing with the Schmidt set.

    Hi Peter,
I just checked, there are Two PSA 10 Trams, and neither of us have them! I can't help but wonder if the 85's just don't get submitted very often. People break those boxes looking for McGwire rookies. Those boxes are too expensive for us set collectors to bust open because of McGwire, so few are actually submitted.

I'm just catching up with this topic. What fun reading!

One of the most desireable player sets has to be Mantlefan's...it is awesome.

I subbed my first free lot recently and got a real education. I bought a raw '62T Kaline on eBay a while back and thought it was going to be one of the nicest cards of my set. It came back as a PSA 7. I might have to keep that set in a raw condition.

I'm thinking I might start sending in my 200+ KPuckett cards and get on that Master Set listing. I think I can add a card or three to the composition list too.

Hoof - Thats a wantlist, not a 'have' list. I do have that one but thanks much for looking! Every month I manage to knock off another 50-100 cards off the list. Hopefully I can gain ground on all the new cards coming out. Best wishes on the Puckett registry. That would be a fun player. The 1985 PSA 9 I own wasn't cheap I paid around 35.00 for it on ebay. And was out bid on the 10 , it sold for more then a 1983 DR or Fleer rookie! I think off hand just over 75.00.

I think I would gladly pay for it at this point.

At the McGwire (as was mentioned earlier) makes opening this stuff way too cost prohibitive. Pulling a Clemens or Puckett would help offset the cost, but seems like really bad odds.

This is a fun post guys! I am working on a Harmon Killebrew master set and hoping the new issues never get added. Does anyone have an idea what happens with all of the cards that are coming out of our favorite players? Do the master sets explode with all of the new cards?

I have just added a near perfectly centered 1958 in PSA 8 and a 1972 "in action" PSA 9 to my set. I started an Alex Rodriguez player set to occupy my time when I can't find a card to fill a set I'm building.
Currently assembling the 2004 UD SP Game Used All Star Sigs Baseketball set. It is an autographed insert set numbered to 25. Having a slow go finding some of the cards. Currently 10.000 41.38% with 9 more currently at PSA. Fun issue!
Other sets I'm slowly working on are:
1959 Top Flight Stars 8.830 24.00% Bought the rest of this set raw .. waiting for it to arrive and hope I can submit them soon.
1956 Gum Adventure 8.160 14.00% Started this set for the boxers but got hooked. Hoping to finish it in an 8 or better.
I have a bulk submission to do for the 86-87 Fleer Basketball set to that get that one completed.
At some point I'd like to add some scans as I find that a nice feature when looking for a set to build.

Looking for a Glen Rice Inkredible and Alex Rodriguez cards
  • I just started my Ron Guidry Basic Set a few weeks ago, and I'm up to about 43% completion. Still trying to complete my Archie Manning Master Set - only three more cards needed.

As for my Pete Maravich Basic and Master Sets, still searching the world for upgrades. I was fortunate to get a tip on a 1974 Topps #81 PSA 9 recently and was able to get one of the two graded. Since I pretty much know who has the highest grades, all I can hope for is good results from new submissions. My biggest fear is that someone is going to finally get a Maravich rookie graded PSA 10 and I'll have to put a second mortgage on my house to even think of buying it.

I believe for the Master sets you can define your population for PSA. For the Perez Master set it is cut off at 1987, his last year as a player. We have elected not to add any past that point so the population is better defined. Hope that helps. As you can tell I am a Perez collector and just reached 100% on the Master set, now need to work on the upgrades.

I have been tracking the 2005 Upper Deck Hall of Fame Baseball card release this week and have found in excess of 30 different Tony Perez cards already with I am sure more to follow. This set seems to be directly marketed to the player collector. There is no way you could hope to put a set together if there is number of variations per HOF player. Of course UD has not helped us out and put out a checklist yet (always seems to be a couple weeks after release they acknowledge a new set on their website). Day 1 I started to chase the low number Perez cards but with each passing day more and different ones appear. I guess to fill out as many $100+ tins they needed to look for any and all combinations. Is anyone out there going to be chasing down there favorite HOFer cards from this set?

  • I'm at 100% on the Yaz Basic, plan to frame his '60-'83 Topps regular issues. It stands at 7.99, so I wouldn't mind achieving 8.00. The '60 is a PSA 6, but it's one of the first cards I've ever owned, so there's great sentimentality value there.

I have other Yaz cards that would put a nice dent in the Master Set, but don't feel like going for the ones I don't have.
