Is ebay down for anybody else, or . . .

. . . have they just had it with me for listing my fake '52 Mantle in a fake PSA holder and my picture of Susan Estridge?

This is bad news for a lot of people... looks to me like this could be a hack job, to shut them down this badly. No simple computer glitch could kill them like this.

And I had an auction that ended just a few minutes ago... so much for any snipers.

The longer this goes on, the more concerned I am about my ownership of a sizable amount of eBay stock. If they were hacked and lost control of the system, that stock is going to plummet tomorrow morning. And if word gets out that any information was stolen, forget about it... it's going to be a total disaster.

Losing money by the minute here... it has already been out long enough to make national news I'm sure...

Yup, was checking to see if I won a card that ended 15 minutes ago on justsnipe, and got the same "$0 invalid item".
I wonder if the item is completely gone (hacker job) or the last bid took it?

i think if the item is still on record anywhere, they'll have no choice but to give it to the last high bid.. some lucky SOB's might get some deals..

    When Ebay crashes with auctions pending within the last couple of hours;
don't they usually extend it for another day? For some reason, I think I heard
that somewhere. Sellers must be screaming right now if all the snipers can't
get in. $500 SMR item goes for $40-$50 bucks. What would you do? Not sell?
  • Ebay went down like this about 5yrs ago and they extended all auctions ending while they went down by 24hrs.....

    Hope this helps!

  • I remember when ebay went down back then (some 5 years ago). I had auctions up and I'm quite sure that's exactly what they did...extended them 24 hours. If not, they did something. They didn't just leave it be and let the sellers get screwed.
  • stevekstevek Posts: 29,035 ✭✭✭✭✭
Still down as of 12:15am EST. I imagine they'll somehow void all affected auctions and relist them in some way - maybe leave it up to the seller to accept the winning bid or not.

I saw on the news that there was one of the worst e-mail bugs ever going around today.
  • wolfbearwolfbear Posts: 2,759 ✭✭✭

Four or five years ago this was a monthly if not weekly or daily occurrence with eBay.

If I remember correctly, they always used to extend all auctions
for an additional 24 hours if the outage lasted more than an hour like this one has.

Old-timers will also recall that eBay used to shut down for a few hours every Thursday night at midnight.

  • I had forgotten about that weekly shutdown they used to do. Wasn't it at like 1am PST? That used to bother me (which is probably not a good sign...I need to get out more)

Just a hunch, but I'm willing to bet that besides extending the auctions that were supposed to end tonight, I'm willing to bet eBay has a .05 or free listing day to appease the angry mob of sellers that will be screaming at them.

That's what happen to me. I had a high $$ card on auction that didn't do well when the last major outage ocurred. I complained to ebay because they didn't extend. They just said they missed extending some listing and just gave me a FVF credit. Wasn't happy about that. They could at least extend for a couple of hours.

Their seller central forum is up. Someone posted their policy saying they'd extend auctions 24 hours if they were down for more than 2 hours. Also, there was some talk about software improvements, so it might not be hacker related (darn).

I see that a high-profile card closed at about $800 below recent sales, I presume because no one could bid during the last couple hours of the auction. I don't think "eBay apologizes for the inconvenience" is going to do it for that seller.
  • envoy98envoy98 Posts: 4,000 ✭✭
They extended all the auctions that would have closed at that time by x number of hours. A good friend of mine and I were stocking up on stuff last night for the show in a couple weeks and we were both high bidders on things that had <10 minutes left... I went and looked today and I'm high bidder with 12hrs 54 minutes left.

Bummer too, I was about to get a great deal!

To expand on the messages CreeperKat posted, here was the final ebay announcement regarding the outage and what they will do to try to resolve things:

    ***eBay Site Issues Update***
Date: 05/10/05 Time: 02:10:17 AM PDT

This evening a primary hosting provider for eBay in the San Francisco Bay Area experienced a power outage, and all site functions were temporarily down. eBay has been working with our hosting vendor to fully restore the site. As of 22:10 PDT all listings were available to view and bid on, however, some other site functions remained intermittently available. We will work to resolve these remaining issues during the next several hours.

eBay will be issuing credits and listing extensions, per our outage policy.

The listings on eBay’s sites around the world sit on 21 complex databases. Today’s outage affected the listings on those databases in two ways:

    * One group of databases was unavailable from 19:33 PDT until 22:10 PDT. Since the items in these databases were unavailable for more than 2 hours, eBay will credit all fees associated with these listings. In addition, eBay has extended these listings by 24 hours and added an additional two hours to the credit and extension period.

    * The second group of databases was unavailable for less than 2 hours, from 19:33 PDT until 21:15 PDT. Since these items were unavailable for less than 2 hours, eBay will credit all listing fees associated with these listings, but will not extend the listings. We will also add two hours to the credit period for these listings.

Credits for both groups will include the .40 fee for any 10-day auctions that were active at 19:33 PDT.

We thank you for your patience, and we apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused. We will provide additional information on this situation later today.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

  • Auctions in my watch list (both active and ended) were gone!
