New ship coin (well ... sort of) arrived today ... pics !!!

Samoan coin comemmorating the voyage of the Kon-Tiki in 1947.
The book "Kon-Tiki" was my favorite as a young reader, and the voyage taken by Thor Heyerdahl and his crew was fascinating.

It's not really a ship, but a raft made of balsa logs, but it is still my favorite sea-going vessel image

  • Nice Coin. Wasn't the raft made of bundles of reeds?

That was "The Ra", if memory serves. Heyerdahl did another raft voyage in the Mediterranean some years after the Kon-Tiki expedition.

  • In the Mid 60s, I lived in Oslo Norway where the actual Kon Tiki is located in a museum. When I visited it, Thor Heyerdahl happened to be there, and invited me and a couple others to get on it and explained several things about it. It was a wonderful experience.

The Kon Tiki is still there and located near the Viking Ship Museum as well as the Fram Artic ship Museum.

When I started my collection of Viking Ships on coins, I counted the Kon Tiki as a Viking ship since there were very few Viking Ship coins that I could locate. Thor Heyerdahl was a “Viking” (sort of) and it was his ship. I still have it with the Viking Ships, but now I now have about 200 different Viking Ship coins and medals.

It is a great coin to have.

  • That is a neat coin, about the same time a young man sailed around the world in an 18 ft boat called the Dove as I remember. There were some bold sailors around then. Cool coin, its on my "one day" list.

Sounds like a wonderful experience, Bob image
Heyerdahl did two other "raft" adventures. One on the "Ra" and another on a vessel called the "Tigris" (I think). Samoa has coins featuring each of his vessels. I think I'm going to try to get all of them.
