Since I saw the photo of Phil's medal on this forum, I was looking for another specimen for my own collection. Normally I don't collect medals but the Germania on the reverse is beautiful, I had to have it.
Darkhorse also asked for more informations about it and if I could find a better one like his own specimen.
I still don't know how many of these medals were issued, possibly more informations could be found in the book "Bismarck Medaillen" written by Julius Eduard Bennert, published in 1905.
I keep on searching, darkhorse.
Bismarck was a very popular person, even more popular as Emperor Wilhelm II. himself and so many different Bismarck medals were made.
This medal by Oetzel was not easy to find, sure I saw one at ebay (one in
three months!) another three in floorauction-cataloges.
But they had one thing in common: heavy, visible marks.
So I printed out a picture of Phil's medal and showed it to every dealer at the coinshows in Karlsruhe and Stuttgart, nobody could offer it.
A few days ago I came across the medal, a dealer in Freiburg offered it.
It is a little bit off-center and in the past 110 years any jerk thought that it will
be a good idea to clean the fields. So unfortunatelly many hairlines are visible under bright light.
Nevertheless, the fields are still mirrorlike.
I don't think that I will find a better specimen in the near future, mine is without toning also and not as appealing as Phil's.
Darkhorse, in my opinion you own the most beautiful medal of the this type I saw yet.
Here is mine:

<< <i>truly a remarkable medal... I am curious... how often did the man wear a hat
like that? This is not the usual profile that most folks see of Bismarck... I like
this medal and it is very attractive. >>
Yes coincat, when people think of Bismarck they mostly imagine him wearing
a Pickelhaube like that ...
... or wearing a cap like a skipper or pilot ...
... do you remember this well known burlesque ...
...wearing a Pickelhaube is impractical, particularly when it's raining. In his
free time he often wore a hat like that.
Look at Bismarck with his dogs:
<< <i>Whom in Stuttgart did you show that medal to? I got it from Stefan Sonntag. >>
I knew where you bought it darkhorse, and so I showed the picture to Mr. Sonntag also.
All I got from him after he looked at it was a disapproval.
I'm wondering if he could not remember the medal he sold once.
<< <i>I know there's a Kroker + Walsch in Stuttgart but I never went to it. There's a
Kroker + Walsch in Karlsruhe but I only went to it when the older gentleman
was working because he treated me better than the other man working
there. >>
Kroker + Walsch was not at the coinshow in Stuttgart, for Karlsruhe I am not sure.
I don't know Kroker + Walsch, but it doesn't sound good that there are people working, unable to treat a customer correct.
<< <i>Since I saw the photo of Phil's medal on this forum, I was looking for another specimen for my own collection. >>
In this paragraph it would've been better to use the perfect tense:
Since I saw the photo of Phil's medal on this forum I have been looking for another specimin for my own collection.
<< <i>informations >>
Usually we use 'information' singularly.
<< <i>Darkhorse, in my opinion you own the most beautiful medal of the this type I saw yet. >>
"I have seen yet" a perfect tense again... and thank you! I was lucky to find it.
My last English lesson was in 1984 and there was no need to speak English for me for about 20 years.
During this period much of my knowledge about the English language got lost.
I apologize again for my bad Engish grammar and vocabulary.
Maybe you should come back to Germany and give me some English lessons, and some in taking pictures of coins also.
We could have a good beer also.
Feel free to teach me.
<< <i> You're English is far better than what I've encountered, especially in Canada. >>
I stopped being an English teacher for a reason.
Fantastic medal. I've always admired Phil's.
