Wow, it must be rare...It's not even listed in the Red Bookimage

The one I found listed in the Red Book is going for about $125.00

What's so rare about this one?

This coin is a Newcomb-8 which is classified as Extremely Rare. Also, there are a only 2 that have been graded by NGC.

What are the diagnostics that confirm this as N-8? Thanks.

its listed on the NGC holder as a N-8

There is a large die crack from the first star to the left of the one straight threw the 2nd star in in the eight in eighteen on the right hand side
  • That is the correct diagnostic and it is an R-4 according to Newcomb. Worth a premium if you're a variety collector of large cents.

Fair market value is $175 to $200. It has been downgraded to R3 since the time Newcomb's book was published; R3 is "scarce," but not "rare". "Extremely Rare" is an expression reserved for early copper coins rating R7 or R8.

    Hi,

    For some pricing information:

    Tom Reynolds:

    Tom Reynolds

    or Steve Ellsworth

    Butternut

Rhedden is correct it is an R3 now.

Nice piece but not that hard to find.

    Good luck,
