K-176 THE GERMAN REPLY TO AMERICA (Wilson, Deutsch-Amerikanischer Notenwechsel), 1916, Cast FE, 56.7mm, Wt. 60.1g, VZ.

On the occasion of President Wilson’s request to cease the submarine warfare.

Obverse: President Wilson in armor writes a note to Germany, “Note to Germany – discontinue submarine warfare without delay, or else diplomatic relations will be severed. – Wilson.”. To the right a naked female Justice holds a pair of scales from which hangs a calendar with date, April 20, 1916. Inscription in border “Either-Or.”

Reverse: Wilson’s two armored hands hold Germany’s reply with seal, “We will not refrain from the submarine weapon! England’s methods violate International Law; The war can be shortened by discontinuing the supply of ammunition; Wilson claims to be the best neutral.” Dated May 5, 1916
