OT-A SIX YEAR OLD DARKSIDER

One of the items I sell on the Bay of E is an album that holds fifty Darkside coins, along with the corresponding coins to fit the slots. Not an expensive item, but I do get $14.99 for it . A couple of weeks ago I got an email from a lady who told me that her six year old son Shane really wanted the album, but as a single Mom she couldn't afford to give it to him, and wondered if I could give them a price break. I told her that if Shane wrote me a letter telling me why he enjoyed collecting coins, I would send him an album. Lo and behold, last week I got this letter in the mail. I thought it was pretty good for a six year old, and asked the Mom for permission to share his story and name and address with some of my dealer and collector friends. Since I can't post large images, here is a transcript of the letter he sent:
"Dear Mr. Coin,
I like coins so much. They are shinny and make me happy. I love the way money looks, how different it is from all the places in the world! I like to count it and learn about it. I have a treasure chest with coins from other countries and 2 books about money.Some day I will be on a 200.00 bill because I will be the president. You are cool. I hope you like my letter. I will send you a picture of my coins and me.

Some day this prophecy might actually come to pass (both Shane's presidency and the advent of $200 bills, which by then will be like twenties are now). And the coins Dan sent him will end up in the Smithsonian or on display in the White House or the McNally Presidential Library.

Dan - You are tops in my book! That was a classy thing for a dealer to do, my grandson is also six and I have found that is a good age to start them out. I have been buying world coins with animals on them for him and he loves them.

If he DOES become President, I hope you have held onto his original letter! It'll be worth FAR more than the $14.99 you passed up and the pound of coins you sent! And maybe you can use it to leverage a deal with him to become his Secretary of the Treasury or of the Mint!!

I just want to say that I am touched by all the nice things you have said about me, but what I did was really no big deal I hope that all of you that would like to help touch a kids life in a positive way will take the time to send Shane a coin or two. Hopefully, he will stay in touch and I will be happy to post his responses in this Forum. Also, I think I will start another thread with a GIVEAWAY! All you need to do to enter is send Shane something. Strictly on an honor system. The prize will be directly proportional to the number of responses posted. The more people that enter, the nicer the prize, which will be something special!

On the serious side, though, I may just beat everone else's prepared packages for the mail & DRIVE mine over to the young man's home tomorrow myself! There's no mail on Sundays!! Do a good deed AND check out the single mom!!

This is indeed a touching story. I got hooked when I was 5 or 6 too, so it's a good time to bring them under the influence of the dark.

I rounded up a batch mostly Chinese, Japan, Canada, Hong Kong coins and a few wheats cents, and a Californai state quarter I had lying around and sent them off today. I am sure he will get a lot of enjoyment thanks to your efforts.
