Coin Storage

Hi!

As a beginner, I have a question about storing coins.
What is the best way to store coins?
Are the 2X2" cardboad any good? I head that they are not good for long term storage.

I also know that some people use air-tied holders?
How will you store the air-tied holder?
Are there any ablums for storing the air-tied holders?

Any responds will be appreciate!

BTW, I just made this new account. My older user name is YCCY9229.

Thanks!

When I had the (coin) bit firmly between my teeth I began exploring different storage possibilities. I wanted a way to display coins attractively, safely, efficiently. I tried Airtite, 2x2's, every comon method available and wound up doing 2x2"s. I can maintain upwards of 2000 world coins in 4 different heavy-duty binders at a minimal cost. I don't think anyone on the forums has had a bad thing to say about mylar coin-safe 2x2's.

I maintain most of my proof coins in airtite's in shallow clear-top plastic cases with a black foam bottom. It sets them off visually and since the plastic cases (approx 12 x 12) are manufactured specifically for culturing bacteria in the lab they are totally free of chemical effusions that might harm the proofs.

Some forum members have world-class collections of medals and coins stored in wooden cases in large shallow drawers-things of beauty.

A visit to a number of coin supply websites will visually acquaint you with all the possibilities. Remember, if your collection grows into the 1000's and you are using something to store your coins at a buck or half a buck a pop, that's a lot of coin money!

Edited to add-yes, there are binders to store airtites, slabs, anything that will hold a coin.

  • 2x2s have worked fine for me for decades. Just keep them in a dry, low humidity environment. If you get quite a few you might also try an old aluminum foil box to organize them in.

2x2s are generally OK. Be careful of the staples. If they do not staple flat, flatten them down with needle nose pliers so that you don't scrape an adjacent coin with a staple.

Mayonnaise and peanut butter jars work well.

If you take the mayonnaise or peanut butter out of them first.

Oh, I dunno... leave the mayonnaise in there... it could protect the coins and give 'em a nice glossy appearance.
