1689 William and Mary Coronation Medal

Just got this ,,,Scratches on the face are Raised as if scratched into the die and are the letters W and M. the scratches in the field on the reverse are damage. The piece looks Unc except for that.

Do you have any idea why they would be scratched into the Die that way

Could be their way of rendering the dies useless after the official issues but whoever got it later decided to strike some more copies.

Most of the die destructions that I have seen were very heavily gouged to render them useless. This has a clear W over Williams face and M over Mary's not heavy like destructive marks. Are there any known "Restrikes" of this medal that might confirm this.
  • Cool, I really like the William & Mary stuff.

Whenever I see a William and Mary coin (specially a 5 Guinea), Steely Dan's song My Old School plays in my head.

    "I said oh no
    William and Mary won't do

Well I did not think the girl
    Could be so cruel
    And I'm never going back
    To my old school"

I drove the William and Mary Home coming Queen, sitting on the top of the back old 54 MG convertable, for Home Coming in 1988,,,It was drizzling and cold,,, she sat on the plastic window and broke it. I ended up with a cold and had to buy a new top,,,,NEVER again will I offer to drive in a parade.image

My husband is a William and Mary grad...one of my earlier Darkside buys was a present for him, from the year 1693-the year the school was founded. I like the medal!

From what I see I think the W&M are scratched into the coin not the die. Yes I know hey are raised on the coin but it is possible to use a thin sharp tool and cut at a shallow angle in such a way as to do an undercutting that results in a RAISED line on the coin.
