Updated information on 1980 Topps Baseball PSA 8,9,& 10.

Most of you don't, but if you happen to follow the 1980 Topps set, around March of 2002, in PSA 8, or better, I choose to build it since it was a childhood favorite and nobody else was interested in 1980 Topps,so I thought. Thanks to a Dog named Bear,my set breakup came 18 months later, slightly over 7% short of the 100% mark.Oh well,I still love 1980 Topps just as much, it's still a pleasure to be a part of it,only if to applaud those diligently working on it.One thing I look forward to, is a possible debut, including many of my old cards at 100%,with a GPA that could rival Ron Ritt's 68 GPA.

Presently,it's still impossible to complete this set.Although I predict,by the end of 05 - one out of 3 people will reach 100%.Possibly two.In 2002,there were 5 active players, but 3 since bailed. It's surprising how many cards are readily available, how much the population has exploded, but nobody reached 100% after 3 years and the top guy is stuck at 83%!Two collectors are really close to the finish line, but they've hit the stone wall at the same point I did.Around the high 70s to 80% range,I really couldn't do much towards completion, although was able to upgrade many 9s to some of the first 200 very beautiful, accurately graded PSA 10s.Many of which now reside in the top sets,or soon will.

With all the inconsistency controversy,I wonder if many of the early submitted 8s were actually much better than what's coming up in today's 9s.Thinking many have a chance in hell,I'm curious if anyone has ever cracked out and resubmitted an 8 they got from me?For example, the PSA 8 389 Pete LaC-ock was severely undergraded as many other of my 8s were, too.Unfortunately, hardly any current set builders want 8s,so many I had went to those who dabble just picking sporadically throughout the set.I think LaC-ock and Shane Rawley are the only 2 1/1 8s that wound up with actual set builders.Right now,I can't locate anyone to share much of anything on resubmitted cards.

In my notes listed below, cards like the 555 Figgy have a 1/1 10 pop and 2 9s.For some reason, I didn't list them and other cards due to lack of information,I guess. As well, others like the 666 Tigers Rookies are both 1/1 in 8 and a 10.Also,there are a bunch of team and player set collectors who snatched up a bunch of 1/1 9s who won't give up things even if they upgraded and I'm not sure how to organize all that sort of information at this time.

The Dave Kingman 10 was a pop 2,but I guess not.It now resides in a Kingman freaks collection. The Stolen Base Leaders 10 is also gone forever for a set builder but happily resides in Pebbly Jack's collection along with the Royals team somewhere in the registry, both are 1/1s.You can forget about the Trammel 10,too which was a DGF 10.I went to buy back the 1/2 NYY Team from Gator, but it appears to be lost somewhere in his move. The other NYY TC was sold twice two years ago, never to hit ebay ever again and don't think it's anywhere on the registry. The Astros Team 1/1 is in Ellington CT,the Astros variation 8 (without mgr's name) I don't know who wound up with it, but did sell it in 2002,unknowing at the time it was a variation. My Reds team 10 is in Ohio somewhere,Jeff Van Neil has the other one,so you can probably forget those two.

That being said, there's quite a bit to be up against for a while, but it's not impossible to accomplish something when high population cards, including many stars are at buyers prices right now.Certainly a great deal if you can purchase quantity.Every now and then, one of the important low populations needed to complete a set will reach a 2002 price, but if you stay away from those you'll reach 50%,or so,inexpensively and rather quickly.Might not be a 61 or 69 set,but commons included,it's a nice run of players - 1 to 726.

Lou Brock's final active career card and it's not a full stat card,McCovey's final career card. For Rookies - Sutcliffe,Stieb,Orosco,Hatcher.Lots of HOFERS either early in their career or in midway through.Current Managers from many of today's ball clubs.Guys like Staub,Kaat,Perry

and others with lengthy careers.Like I said, a nice run of players.

Thanks,JS.I'm kind of enjoying hearing from people to see what's going on instead of looking it all up myself. For now, there's enough where someone can tell me something I don't know and can add to my notes.

Great topic Rob, really can apply to any year /set as well.

I emailed you per some specific cards from 1980 I found tough to find in higher shape and will not repeat it here but would just like to expand a bit on the general theme.

1976 to and including 1980 represent the final years of simple one major set basebal cards, they are not extemely popular like 1975 nor were they issued in series like 1973 and back. These four years are somewhat "easy" to find in unopened form and have not seen a groundswell of activity in submitting because they a still a bit inexpensive in comparison to many older cards.

None of knows for sure how many collectors out there are "still not going to grade their cards" for whatever reason. The span of 76 - 80 has only a few solid big ticket cards to prompt one into grading his potential raw gems. Once the 2, 3, or 4 fanatics for each year gets most of his good raw stuff graded, where or why do the rest of the cards come from ??

Some time in the future 1980 will be 25 years old, hey that's now and the general public sees it as "vintage", but in more future time some of the big-time, big-money collectors may get into this year for any variety of good reasons. There may be a jump in the pops much greater than say, the 50s or 60s in percentage, as investor-types see the potential profit is now there for 1980.

To me 1980 is the end of an era, the last one card rookie, the start of national conventions, the continuation of yearly price guides, no updates, traded sets, inserts, auto-ed items and so forth. A pretty nice looking format / style too, I might add. A fine set to collect and discuss !!

    Thanks,jaxxr.

1980 is the end of an era

    Perfect!

What do you know of variations? There are a few,but last I saw the population reports some didn't indicate, for example, why 3 331 Hebners?

The design is a little less exotic than the 78s and a little less Box looking like 79s although as simple in design as 79s. As a run of cards it starts off very simple.

Six Highlights which are all: Cardinals,Phillies,Dodgers and Red Sox,however, not a single Pirate in the mix 1-6. 7-200 player cards,201-207 League leaders. Then 661-686 are all Rookies most notable names off the top of my head are Dan Quissenberry,Jesse Orosco and Mickey Hatcher.Any player who was an All star simply said so on their card.Anybody who was a Rookie on a full player card like:Stieb,Henderson,or Sutcliffe had no indication until you flip it over and see for yourself. No All-Star Rookie, nothing.

One cool thing about flipping over to the blue backs (for those who spend intimate time with other years is: try checking out all these guys like Kaat,Perry,McCovey or Yaz's long run of stats, the changes in their careers vs who they started out with.I believe they are the earliest of for starting years.McCovey I believe is the longest.1959 I think to the year of Orosco's Retirement and Henderson (who has not officially yet retired though under the radar) is quite a bit of baseball running throughout some cardbaord there.I'm sure it's mindblowing on any set but just fun to look at like Nolan Ryan's huge strikeout seasons, then look at how many losing records there is.Holy Smokes!

Rob - you truly are the guru of the 1980 set. As you know, I gave up on my 1980 set earlier this year, and many of my 1/1 10's wound up in good hands (as part of that eventual debut set you refer to). I still have quite a few 10's, and many 9's heading to Ebay in the next few weeks, but I know that once I finish the 1979 set I am currently working on, I will return to this one again.

    Ctsoxfan,

Best of luck in doing the 1979 Topps set, it is quite tough.

I have had much unopened new material for 1977 thru 1981 Topps. In my view and experience 79 is much harder than any of the four other Topps' sets. Per the Set Registry it can be seen 79 has the lowest completion of any major set, actually from 1950 thru 1981.

It may not be too attractive in most collectors eyes, so that may be a reason in part, but as one said in a post years prior, " Ray Charles must have been in charge of quality control for the 79 set ". There are some poor examples out there.

I tend to think that in 1980 Topps realized their monoply era was coming to an end, and they decided to implant some controls to get printing to a reasonable level. All sets have tough numbers, and no set is really "easy" to finish, however the 1979 seems a bit overly perplexing.

Sorry to get off the original topic a little, but both sets are consecutive in issue so therefore are similar somewhat. I am goofy enough to collect both.

Jaxxr, you are correct - the 79 set is a tough one, and gets little respect. It matters little to me, I am fond of this set as it was the very first set I assembled card by card as a kid. As I build the graded set, I have many vending, wax, and even a rack box I am using for submissions - and sometimes you can go through an entire vending box and wind up with 5 cards worthy of submission. This set has probably frustrated a lot of collectors, but I am giving it a serious run - and taking a break from the rest of the 70's issues while I do it. Thanks for the encouragement!

I think in 1978 was the first year I realized I was a collector of baseball cards. Before hand I was too young to realize what it actually was we were doing as kids.

We were collecting more than just baseball.I remember Kiss cards,Star Wars,I think the six million dollar man and even the Charlies Angels as every kid who thought they hated girls actually figured out it was a huge mistake once they laid eyes on Farrah. image Now that I mention it I was sort of more into Kate Jackson. image

Anyhow the first sets I am really aware of beating to death and rubberbanding, taping and pinning up were 78 to 81.My dad introduced me about 74.

Jerry,I see you have a bunch of 79s and a few of the coveted 1980's up for sale. image

Ever notice that there are Hall of famers like:Jenkins,Stargell,Carter,Perry,Fingers are not even payed attention to for SMR pricing but Dawson's card is?

    Why not?...

    Stieb
    Trammell
    Murphy

    Might as well toss in
Quisenberry, Orosco,Sutcliffe's RC's and the 387 Yellow letter should be reported, too.

Just wanted say I appreciate your passion.

Yes, I am finally parting with some of those 1980 10's - much to my dismay. The Dawson is a 1/4 blazer, and I hope it goes to a good home. I have the Bench 10 up also, and in coming weeks I have many more -

Funny you mention those above players. I remember getting the Perry and Fingers from Mile High last year, and paying over $100 each for them, and I was shocked that they went that high given no SMR value. Most of the cards you mention should deserve a line in the SMR anyway...once again, great analysis and stats Rob!

Jerry, the Stargell and a few others which are commons that have gone for stupid prices I had not seen since 2002.It really depends on who's looking for what,I guess. There are certain cards I'd pay in multiples for as others would too.The Shane Rawley card I would have among other difficult commons.

Not knowing how the smr really operates I offered Joe the information I was tracking but he never replied so I gave up being pinpoint accurate in price reporting.

However,I did notice some of the very cards I sold had been reported in Becket. As well,I believe they at least track the Stieb RC.
