    Well, he's creative. He used parts of several popular scam stories: estate sale, old trunk, cigar box. This is a more sophisticated scam than most. Look at the antique props. Look at the bidding! $9K+ at this hour.

    Question: How did Honus get so beat up with rounded corners if he's been snug in that cigarette pack for 96 years?

    He is also shilling his own auction. I emailed all of the bidders letting them know it was fake, and one in particular kept sending me emails defending the seller. Once I accused him of being the seller, he hasn't emailed back.

    In his questions, he keeps denying that he knows anything about the authenticity of the card, that every time he's tried to get it authenticated somebody tries to cheat him, etc. etc. etc. But, more astounding is that there's a $9,100 bid. If it's a real bid. Back where I come from, that's real money.

    The "high bidder" has been on ebay for all of 3 days. What amazes me is that he keeps saying "as i said Im not sure card is real" yet in his description I can't see where he makes that statement.

    Notice that the box of cigarettes from 1909 have filters on them? I remember reading somewhere that companies didn't start putting filters on cigarettes until the 50's - 60's. Anyone know for sure?


    PS I was thinking the exact same thing. If Mr. Wagner had been locked away in that cigar box for the last 100 years... how come the card shows so much wear?

    I didn't think of the filters. I wonder which is closer to modern ... the smokes or the Wagner?

    If I was "not sure if the card is real," I would be awful uneasy about selling a potential fake to someone for $9,000 or more. Not that it matters. He will win his own card, make up a new story, hopefully not use the same cigar box, then put it out on eBay under a different ID. It's just masturbation without the mess.

    For the most valuable sports card in the world, there sure are a lot of T206 Wagners bouncing around on eBay!

    Actually the T206 Wagner isn't nearly as rare as some believe. I have an uncut sheet with the Wagner on it I bought in the 80s. I'm not sure where it is at the moment. I think it is in some box in my closet. Perhaps years later after I'm dead someone will find this long lost treasure. I think I'll put a note with it that says "Please don't send this card to PSA...they will probably switch it with a FAKE!"

    BTW, how do you "seal" a trunk anyway? Sealed trunks at estate sales are the coolest....

    Well, the auction is over and someone legitimate appears to have bought it for over $10,000...should we be a good samaritan and notify the buyer?

    I don't think goldleeg1959 is a shill, it is possible, but most shill bidders only bid on one persons auction.

    He may just be a smart shill bidder, that still does not make this auction any less of a scam.

    Well, it's not a scammer who bought it. Scammers like to buy cheap and sell expensive, usually leaving the word "reprint" out of their own auction, like this seller. Assuming the winner is for real, I wonder what he will do with the warning.
