So much for the mintage caps on these.......the sky is the limit on the mintages this year. The US mint is kinda greedy.image

At least give some text/link for that info/gripe.

I went ahead and found it (and, I am not happy about it either, but it is the way it will be).

    US Mint 2005-W SAE Announcement
Priced at $27.95 each, the 2005 American Eagle Silver Proof Coins have an unlimited mintage and are minted at the United States Mint at West Point. The coins bear the "W" mint mark. The popularity of the Silver Eagle Proof program has been increasing steadily over the past few years, and the United States Mint is committed to meeting the collecting needs of its long-time customers, as well as accommodating the requirements of the many new coin collectors joining the ranks of this growing hobby.

  • What the hell does unlimited mintage mean? Are they going to be making these like cents?

I wouldn't be surprised if they don't sell any more than last year (I think that was about 800,000 or so). Without any urgency to buy, some people will just skip them altogether.

Unlimited mintage means they will make as many as they have orders for.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Means they can make them until the 2006 SAEs come out basically.
If they reach 500,000, no problem.
If they reach 600,000, no problem.
If they reach 1,000,000 by next month, no problem...they keep minting them as long as there is demand.

But, when it is time for the 2006 SAEs to get minted, they stop.....whether 500,000 or 5,000,000 have been minted.

<< <i>What the hell does unlimited mintage mean? Are they going to be making these like cents? >>

It means the US Mint will make and sell as many as are purchased during the selling time window.....which should be one year to the hour from the first day they went on sell.

You mean the mint is going produce coins to meet demand. When did this policy change?

The mintage will be WAY over a million, no doubt about it. Didn't the US mint sell out their 750,000 mintage cap for the 2004 proof silver eagles half way thru the year?:image
  • Knowing this info......What happens if the collecting public decides now that they don't want them. Instant rarities? Less produced because demand fell off?..This really could be a good thing.....Couldn't it???

I thought they always minted coins to meet demand.

No, the US Mint puts a mintage cap on certain issues. The Mint did this with the 1999-P Proof SBA 1$, it's mintage cap was 750,000 and took about five years before they finally sold out. They also have done this with all the coin and currency sets.image

They never do meet the mintage cap figure anyways do they on Proof SAE.

I liked getting the 1999 Proof SBA in like 2001 or 2002 from the mint.

They where still available for sale as of February.

  • The 2004 ASE's were still for sale 3 days ago, right up until the 2005's went on sale. They had a maximum mintage of 850,00, it'll be interesting to know how many they actually did sell.

I'd give you the world, just because...

Speak to me of loved ones, favorite places and things, loves lost and gained, tears shed for joy and sorrow, of when I see the sparkle in your eye ...
and the blackness when the dream dies, of lovers, fools, adventurers and kings while I sip my wine and contemplate the Chi.

I always thought that a coin minted in a specific year had to have that year's date on the coin. (Unless of course a special exception is made, I.E. the 1976 quarter, halves, and dollars). So wouldn't the mint not be allowed to make any more SAE Proofs after December 31st of this year? Of course they can still sell any leftover stock, but they wouldn't be able to mint any new ones.
I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.

Likewise the 2001 kennedy. I like it when the mint screws up!
