My Highlight Purchase From Baltimore--1866 3 Cent Nickel with Incredible Clashes!

I made it my goal to find a clashed 3CN at Baltimore. On Saturday, this is the very first coin I looked at... I said I'd think about it because the price was high (doubles from 64 to 65), but man, it was exactly what I wanted! Over the course of the day, I looked at every 65 and below, and nothing came close to this one. In addition, I talked to Julian Liedman, and expressed my concerns over pricing... his advice was invaluable. He reminded me that it really was the clash I was looking for, and since I'll enjoy the coin, go for it. Near the end of the show, I went back to the table, and I purchased the coin, which cost more than double my next most expensive piece.
That said, I LOVE this piece. On the obverse, I count four unique impressions of the wreath, and five impressions of Liberty on the reverse. This is the first small coin I've shot on my new setup, so bear with with (the reverse, especially, is stronger than the picture shows)--when I can get the lighting better, I'll have more closeups (the macro lens is so close to the coin, it lets very little light in (around 1/3"). I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do. The large images are provided for each shot--they're just cropped, not rescaled.

That is very high on the Coolness Scale.
It's easy to see why you love this coin so much.
that is a nice coin. i've been looking at/studying up on the series the last couple of years and really like the 1865 and 1868 dates for clash. i've seen some with almost the entire wreath encircling the portrait and others with the almost complete portrait on the reverse, even down to XF45 grades. what strikes me about your coin is that the overall detail is still strong despite the fact that the dies had to be polished after each clash, or should have been. my lone coin to date is nicely colored 1865 that i bought raw in a club auction for $17 and subsequently holdered at PCGS as MS62. what probably threw the other club members off the coin is the fact that the numeral detail is weak and highly polished so they read it as wear. yours shows only the faintest loss of detail, very nice indeed.

The reverse, within the wreath, shows some polishing, but nothing else. The obverse looks like a nice and lustrous 65--not special except for the clashes. Seems you paid a tad less than I

I find your comments about the price and grade interesting. Personally, if there's a price jump for a very small grade increase, I tend to buy on the lower side. For example, you saw the 3 cent nickel I bought over the weekend (pictured below, as a reminder). I paid $70 for it. Granted, the multiple clashes are more impressive on your coin. Is it worth 8x the price?

As far as the price jump--I decided to really treat myself. I wanted a choice/gem MS type coin anyway, and this one just stood out so much. Based on what I've seen at a lot of places for quite a while, I'd say this one was worth the cost
