E-Bay and Paypal question.

MadMartyMadMarty Posts: 16,697 ✭✭✭
I bought a coin on an E-Bay live auction. The coin is in Canada, I knew about the buyers premium and the $12 for shipping doesn't bother me. But in the E-Mail with the total is this line.

<< <i>If you wish to use Paypal, you have to add 4% to cover the extra fees for us. This is the only way we can accept Paypal, if you do not wish to pay the 4% extra, we will be happy to take a personal check. >>

No where in the auction does it mention a surcharge for Paypal, being they want to be paid in Canadian Dollars I have to use Paypal, also I thought it was against E-Bay rules to charge for Paypal.

Opinions..
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

if they do that in the listing to circumvent the PayPal charge they'd get NARU'd by eBay or at least have to revamp the listing.

It is. I'd send them an email quoting the policy, with links for them to check it out themselves. If they still insist on the 4%, report 'em.

That practice is against the law in California (at least).

They didn't have it in the auction description because they probably know it's a violation of eBay's TOS. As someone else said, dig it up on PayPal's TOS and inform them of it. If they still insist, report them to PayPal.

I saw a guy do that in his listing and mentioned it to him. His response; "They warned me about it a couple times but since I send em a nice check every month they kinda leave me alone."

Matter of fact, the auction doesn't mention PayPal at all.

I paid with Paypal in Canadian Dollars and did not add 4% to the bill. I wonder if I'll get my coin.

Just cuz he dint mention it in his listing doesn't mean PayPal isn't an option. Since he dint mention it in his listing I don't think eBay/PayPal can do much here.

Wanna bet? PayPal will freeze and suspend your account if you get two reports. Marty could simply forward the email to PayPal, and if they have been reported by one other person buh bye PP account. Same thing goes for listing stuff in other venues.

I think that no surcharge for Paypal is a USA thing, other countries can surcharge.

You did what I would have done. Pay it with PayPal without the 4%. If they don't send you the coin or if they complain. Respond with a copy of the TOS with that spot highlighted. Plus you can always threaten to neg them if they are violating the TOS.

Any seller that sells through eBay's US site can not do it.

Obviously the seller is accepting PayPal but only on his terms. Just send a check.

And as soon as PayPal gets two reports of this, that's the only way he's going to get payments because PayPal will shut down their account.

What is everyone else here told?
Ask any and all questions before bidding!, right?

I don't see paypal listed......if you wanted to pay with paypal, you would ask before bidding/auction closing, right?

If they are doing it as a favor to you (so you don't have to send a check), why not pay the extra $4?

Plenty of board members do that when they sell and I don't begrudge them their decision. If I need to pay using paypal that badly, that it will increase the price, then I accept it. Otherwise, I will use a check.

Sorry Marty.....even if what they are doing isn't "right" according to paypal, I think that you should have paid by check, asked about paypal AND made your decision PRIOR to bidding, or pay the $4 extra.

I'm on the seller's side on this one.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Well the obvious thing to do here is to have two accounts; one personal and one premier. Using the non CC personal account will avoid the fees but you lose protection for the transaction if the buyer can pay by echeck or from an existing balance.

You are right Tom, but the personal one may exceed the $500 limit for the month.

I think the right thing would be to accept the payment terms (it seems check was the preferred) or pay the extra if you want to pay by paypal.
But, that is just because I think the fact that the seller was talked to prior to close, and there is an alternate payment method, makes that the right thing to do.

Again, people that are so up in arms on this amaze me as I have never heard anyone call out a board member on this and yet, an unknown seller is castigated over it.

(note...personally, I don't care as it isn't my coin, nor me who bought it.....I just think that the tone of the thread on this is wrong)

It would appear that the seller offered the PayPal option after the auction ended and the offer was NOT in response to an inquiry by the buyer.
With a personal PayPal account you can send as much $$ as you want up to the daily limit of $10k per day as long as the payment is for quasi-cash and NOT for goods or services. There is currently not limit on how much quasi-cash that you can send thru PayPal.

Having two PayPal accounts should lessen but not eliminate the number of times that a recipient would put himself in the position of asking for the fee.
