Does ebay care . . .

. . . why you end a listing early, as long as you pay them the listing fees? For instance, if you find somebody who wants to buy the item who, as far as you know, didn't see it on ebay?

No, They dont care. Just follow the guidlines to end the listing early. I have done it a few times. If you think about it, its your money and your listing so they really cant say or do anything about it. For all they know the item was stolen, broken or just not able to be sold anymore.

It sucks when watching an item for awhile that you really want and intend on winning no matter what.... then the seller ends the auction early. image

Although I can't blame sellers for doing it if someone offers them much more than an item is worth but it may also hurt them if they get to be known for doing this often. Buyers may refrain from giving that seller any business ever.

Yes, I would have to agree with Knuck. I have been upset more then once when it happened to me. On the flip side I ended an auction once because the buyer gave me a sob story of how he was building a car for his son and needed the part I was selling. I felt bad so I ended the auction early. The other time I did it was because I was afraid I was going to lose my butt on a blower I was selling. As far as the original question goes, Ebay as company doesnt care if the auction is ended early as long as you follow their guidlines.

Thanks, guys. Knuckles, I marvel at that picture on your post. I'm not a hockey fan, but sometimes you forget that those goalies back then wore absolutely nothing on their heads or faces. That's back when men were men and women were proud of it.

I have ended only one auction early. I had a 1955 Bowman Jim Hughes Brooklyn Dodgers up for auction. Guy said he was Hughes nephew and was trying to put together a bunch of his uncle's cards to give to all his cousins as Christmas presents. He was new to EBAY so I provided a SEARCH link for him. He ended up buying all that were up for sale, including the one from my ended early listing.

I'm certain Ebay does care. Ebay has built it's business on the support of their loyal buyers and sellers. Anything that may negatively affect their clientele is something that affects Ebay. I'm sure they're working on this problem as we speak. image

No offense but what problem? It has to be the sellers perogative to remove a listing if the situation warrents it. Ebay cant have the final say in whether we want to end a listing early for some reason. Yeah I dont like it when it happens but thats how it goes sometimes.

eBay's only real concern is sellers avoiding cheap sales by ending listings early instead of paying the reserve fee. So they now bar sellers from ending an auction with less than 12 hours to go. This at least stops people from ending it with a minute left, which is an improvement. Other than that, they don't care. They give you several reasons for ending the auction, you pick one, and how do they know if you have a legit reason? One of the options is simply "item no longer for sale," which covers every possible reason you could imagine, sleazy ones included.

I just recently ended an auction for 106 2005 Topps Heritage light backs which had many watchers with no bids yet because I decided to collect all of them. My bad image

If there are no bids and just watchers, I see nothing wrong with ending the auction early.

If there are bids, recommend to the potential buyer to throw the bid on or recommend a snipe service to them, and let the auction roll on.
  • Ebay does not care as long as the guidelines are followed.. The problem is you as a seller have no protection from Ebay or Paypal if the item is ended early. The only time Ebay does care and they actually put an end to it buy not allowing sellers to end auctions that have bids with less than 12 hours left. You can cancel the bids but you cannot end it.

A year or so ago alot of sellers would list items at one cent if the item was not where they wanted it to be they would in the last minute cancel all bids and end the item. Therefore avoiding the reserve price fee while effectivly running a reserve auction.

Honestly is a seller ends an item I am watching early I usually will not buy from them.

  • In my opinion, if an item doesn't have any bids on it the seller can cancel as they wish - although this will irk me if it is an item I have been watching. However, I have had a seller cancel an item and all bids on the item in the last few seconds of an auction. I consider this reserve fee avoidance and I no longer bid on their items. Ebay should also consider this type of behavior reserve fee avoidance, but based on my experience they are not likely to do anything about it.
  • people are not canceling auctions to avoid reserve fees. they are canceling them to sell to a buyer directly, "OFF the Ebay books" so that Ebay does not get their 3% of the final sale price. and THAT is what Ebay is not going to stand for.
  • However, I have had a seller cancel an item and all bids on the item in the last few seconds of an auction

Ebay has closed that loophole, if an item has less than 12 hours left and has bids they can cancel the bids, but not the listing.

not sure the difference. If I have an outside buyer that contacts me and I can sell direct to him and save the ebay final fees, all I do now is delete all the bids right before it closes and then no one wins it - ebay gets $0 in final fees and I still sell to the other buyer.
  • all I do now is delete all the bids right before it closes and then no one wins it - ebay gets $0 in final fees and I still sell to the other buyer

Then you get a sniper who is using a program and gets a bid in at the very last second he wins it for the minimum.
