hope for anyone ever scammed

about a year ago i was just getting back into collecting and had more cash than brains. i bought a " real, guaranteed genuine, from grandmas attic, help a newly wed" 52T mantle for $1500. to my surprise it comes in the mail with signature confirmation and is no more than a scanned card printed on thicker paper. the guy refused the refund, paypal and ebay wouldnt touch it. i contacted my credit card and soon received the refund. i also contacted the police in his city. today i get a call from the detective saying that his report is finished and the DA is taking the case. when the guy is convicted he will have to pay full restitution. he also said that they might even seek an arrest warrant. i wish i could be there when that happened. anyone who has been scammed this is a story for hope. it has been close to a year but still is awesome that this guy is about to get what he deserves.

GOOD! I hope stories such as this get a lot of publicity.
  • Now that is a great ending to a horrible story. I don't know why these losers think they have the right to just rip people off and then say, "too bad". I hope this just turns into a huge headache for him. It would be hilarious if he gets jailtime for this. And you deserve a huge pat on the back for not just sitting back and taking a loss. He would have done it again, now maybe he'll think twice. Did he get kicked off ebay?
Culpepper to ?, only God knows at this point!

A few well publicized arrests and these jokers will thin out some.

I'm sure I have the terminology incorrect, but aren't there rules about interstate commerce that come into play? Or mail fraud?
You'd think things like this would be slam dunks. Of course, $1500 is chump change to a police department.

I am damn glad to hear that something is being done about this guy. If nothing else, restitution and a police record.

Well done, Ranger!!image It sure seems to me that this is federal mail fraud, going across state lines, and the U.S. Attorney's Office has jurisdiction. But they've got too much to do the way it is. The main problem is the difficulty involved in prosecuting somebody in, say, New York, who has sold a counterfeit to somebody in, say, California. But it's good you pressed it. These guys are committing criminal acts when they pull their scams (or even when they try), and I'd like to see some prosectuors get more aggressive about it.

....1500.00 is a felony and that is why that PD took action.

    Ranger good job!
    Good for you.
  • Glad to hear the wheels are in motion and a scammer may be laid to rest for once.

I'm really surprised that the police department where he lived actually cared enough to do anything about it. When you mentioned that, I imagined the Frasier episode where Frasier discovered he had purchased a fake painting. As he contacts the police department his dad tells him to ask for the "fine arts division", and everyone has a good laugh.

I really think eBay should take more responsibility for letting this crap go on. They just turn their head the entire time as long as they continue to collect their selling fees. I think they are eventually in for a huge disaster that will be detrimental to both their business and stock price.

on ebay's home page they are promoting 'everything vintage'. at times there are baseball cards showing. one of the ones they show is the 52' mantle. probably makes people go looking for them.

When you eliminate all the scammers selling fake cards on Ebay the prices for real cards will all double in price. All the suckers buying the genuine attic but selling as a reprint card will be forced to bid on real cards. The fakes help keep prices down for smart collectors.

Same here. Im sure the guy has scammed quite a few others. A $1500 dollar scam, although large for us poor people, probably wouldnt warrant such action. But, the guy has probably had a history of scams.
  • i stopped 3 other scams that the guy ran before they paid. the police contacted all 3 and the ones that did pay and no one wanted to follow up on it. one guy even admitted that he resold the one he bought. i was really supprised when i got the call. to answer the questions about the federal crimes...i originally filed a federal report and they transfered it to the aurora colorado police.

    Good job Ranger!
They should make a reality TV show on card scammers
when they get caught. Would love to see the reactions
    on their faces.

The scammers are still winning by a ratio of 10-1, but those solitary ones are great to hear!
