Mud I saw this earlier today...my thoughts would be about the thin line they cross with respect to gambling for money with kids and packs? Must be legal in all states or they wouldn't have done it.
Tell you what...tho...I wouldn't mind opening a pack and pulling out a crisp bill!!!
basically, topps is doing some sound research on their consumer market. They realize what really drives the collector...what makes him tick. Instead of dawdling around with old jerseys and signatures....they've gone straight to what modern collectors of today really want. Theyve found the essence of today's hobby...what drives it...what makes it tick....what compels dealers to salivate....what drives pack busters insane...
Doesn't surprise me one bit. The gimmicks will keep on coming, wait and see. Can't wait til the $1,000, 1:1 redemption card. Seriously though, how do they get around state gambling laws with this?
Let me see. Six dollar six and eight, all the hard ways for the dealers, two bucks to tip the waitress for the drink, and you're still ahead of $19 a pack.
"Charlie, here comes the deuce. And when you speak of me, speak well."

Exactly - and, its more fun too. At least it is when you are winning, or too drunk to care much...
Topps understands how this modern card thing really works for so many people.
1) Buy some packs at Target or the card shop, break 'em open. 2) Sell everything you don't want on eBay. For many people, it's sell EVERYTHING. They have no intention of "collecting" anything. It's all about busting packs looking for the big payoff, settling for smaller payoffs and losses in the meantime. 3) Take proceeds of sale and head back to Target.
Topps is just eliminating Step 2, allowing people to bust packs on premises or nearby and taking the inserted cash to go right back and buy more packs. It's like the slots or making book -- most people pour their winnings right back into the machines or into new bets.
If inserting cash into packs becomes a big thing, eBay and PayPal will lose a lot of business!

Absolutley true. And many people who post here on a regualr basis are not collectors either, just gamblers.
It could be worse I suppose. Topps could be quartering the bills and slapping "1/4" tags on them. Imagine how many packs you'd have to open to get all four.
About 10 years ago she asked me "why don't you put cash in the pages instead of cards? Then instead of having a room full of worthless crap, you'll have a room full of cash!"
Imagine if you had every buck you spent on cards. Holy crap!
It would definitely work.... but she just doesn't get it.

Be honest. Packs/cards are just the means.
Loves me some shiny!

I collect vintage and don't gamble, so it may come as no surprise that I find the "card" above incredibly crude.
Luraschi should be fired for this crap.
