    To me it looks like it had a run in with some serious electricity. The "grapes" you see are common when welding processes are not under control.

    Definitely damaged. It looks like the big bite was taken out first, then corrosion set in. Interestingly enough, copper and zinc form a highly reactive dielectric couple, so in the right conditions a cent with the zinc core exposed will rapidly corrode. I remember when the composition was first introduced, some people predicted that for that reason they would last only a couple of years in circulation.
