Got the 24" Flexible PAR lamps today

I posted about these lamps the other day. Here they are again:

PAR Halogen Flexible Display Light, PDL-024

I ordered a pair of black lamps, with no additional clamps. Here they are mounted on my copy stand:

All I can say is that these are awesome. Not only flexible from top to bottom, if you look at the last image, that vinyl nut can be loosened and the clamp can be rotated and placed anywhere between 0 and 180°. You can mount them on anything that is 2" thick or less.

I pulled a coin I have never shown here before because I could never get a good image of it. Here it is, though I will be fine tuning the focus and reshooting it later:

Nice photo of the Morgan and it looks like it might be true to life. Maybe my photofloods are a bit of overkill?

Eric, I see there's a Richmond Coin Show April 30-May 1 down there next to Parker Field. . .are you going to that one?

The show is at a Holiday Inn on N Boulevard down near Parker Field, where the Richmond Braves used to play. I guess they still play there, it's been 25 years since I lived in Richmond.

Gotcha. It's now called the Diamond, which is why I didn't recognize it.

Doug - thanks. I don't think I've ever got a "you suck" before. These lamps are really cool. I'm glad I stumbled on them.

Someone sent me a PM and asked how these lamps would do for proofs. Again I'm slightly out of focus here, but you get the idea with the black fields and frosty devices:

Well with that color and being in a 65 holder I can live with some very minor prints.

That is one heck or a setup Eric. I am impressed.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"
  • two questions:

are the lamps ordered from the same site or from another source?

what is the red "mark" next to the letters on the Dolly?

    Thanks Dan

Dan, I ordered the lights from the web site I linked in my first post.

The red "x" is a fiber from the mint case.
  • Hey Eric,

Nice looking setup and great pics!

What bulbs are you using? Did you have to buy a case of them?

Ken, I'm using the Sylvania Daylight Plus PAR 30 bulbs available at any Lowe's store. They run just under $9 each.

Yes, and I've never posted it here before because I could never get a decent picture of it. Here is what I got when I tried my Nikon 4300 on it:

Real nice setup Eric. I'm a rookie at coin photography only having a Nikon Coolpix but it seems to do preety good at macros for posting on the web. Since I bought my camera I have come to have a WHOLE lot more respect for you guys who take the great pics knowing how much work and/or equipment goes into them. I've sometimes got rather fustrated with trying to get the right lighting or angles of lighting. Looks like these work out real nice. I have always used standard incandescent bulbs to photograph under. Do halogen lights give off a different wavelength of light ?? Or I guess what I'm asking is what is the advantage of the halogen lamps over standard bulbs. Also what camera are you using??

Doug, the bulbs I am using are the Sylvania Daylight Plus 75w PAR 30 halogens. They are the best bulbs to use for coin photography short of the very expensive quartz halogen lights. The camera I am using for these photographs is a Nikon D70 digital SLR.
  • That is an impressive setup.

Although I can see why you'd not be as happy as with the older photo, it's certainly not bad. However, the way that splash of color comes out around the date on the new photo, and especially the detail of the toning "pulling away" from the date is very nice. A nice combination of color and lustre as well.

I thought it was a D70. I looked at them but decided not to go so high-tech just yet, maybe after a couple years of photography practice. Do you use it strictly for your coin photos?? Think I'll invest in some and see if it helps with my lighting/ photo problems. It can really suck when you spend an hour trying to get a decent pic. Thanks for the info !!!! Great Post !!!!

Any info anyone on the the show in Kansas City???? I was thinking around April, seems like PCGS was going to be there but can't remember. Got sometimers disease!
  • K6AZK6AZ Posts: 9,295
Actually Doug, I was quite pleased with the way my Nikon 8800 did coin pictures. The reason I bought the D70 is that I landed a new contract for doing technical manual images of circuit boards with components mounted. As close as I would have to get the 8800 for this, I ran into shadows and poor lighting around the components. Using a SLR camera gives you the option of many different lenses, so that you can keep the camera far enough away from the object to get good lighting.

Even now, there are times I'll take twenty shots until I get one I'm satisfied with. Coin photography is very difficult. What camera do you use?
  • lincolnslincolns Posts: 29 ✭✭
Eric, I looked at alot of cameras and it seemed at the time for what I wanted to do which was post coin pics on the web that the Nikon 2200 gave me the most bang for the buck so to speak. It has better macro capabilities than others in the low end price range. I was real surprised by the fact that people were asking ME what camera I was using and different photography questions because the pics I posted were preety good IMHO. I'd post one for you but being a rookie her I'm not sure how to do links here yet. Maybe you can point me to a thread that deals with that.

    Great pics Eric,
Thanks for all your info tonight !!
