Why is it pds? Why not psd?

Why do we order the mintmarks pds? It makes sense to put Philly first as it is the main or mother mint, but why should Denver come before SF? SF is older? Geographical, east to west? When O and CC are involved (or C and D for gold) is there a standard ordering?

Philly-Denver-SanFranciso. East to West, displaying the East coast dominance in national politics?

<< <i>I always thought it was just in alphabetical order. . . >>
Where I come from, "P" is after "D" in the alphabet...so it should be D, P, S.
I believe, however, that the reason P always comes first is because it has always been considered the "main" mint, and all the branch mints have been listed in alphabetical order thereafter. Hence, P, CC, D, O, S when discussing many of the silver series of the 19th century.

By the way, I have seen coin albums that place coins in P,S,D order instead of the customary P,D,S.

but in more recent times, it's merely been alphabetical.

I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

I also feel it should be P-S-D-(W). It should be ordered by the founding of the various mints. So:
P-C-D-O-S-CC-D-M-W
But it will probably forever remain PDS, if only because that's the way the Red Book does it.

<< <i>For those saying it's alphabetical, please contact your Kindergarten teachers immediately. (Hint: P comes after D.) >>
Wow! You'r right.
So it used to be (P), CC, D, O, S.
Now of course since there is actually a "P" MM the order should be: CC, D, O, P, S.

Yeah, that would be a "silent" P. Back to sleep!
I love this stuff!!!!!!
The name is LEE!
This translates to east to west on the map of the USA (not including West Point or the mints that are longer operational, i.e. Carson City, New Orleans, Dahlonega) to P(hilly), D(enver) and S(an Francisco).
Instead of PMS, move leave the mint in Denver and move the San Francisco mint to Anchorage and you would have PDA.
