is this an 1887s vam4 hot 50

finally took a closer look at some of my collection and saw this which I believe to be a vam 4. Hot 50 list rates it at very scarce so what does that mean? any idea of what it does to value? thanks for your help.imageimage

That's a cool coin to acquire, with the repunched date. I can look at my Hot 50 guide when I get home to see about the value, but it will be sorely out of date and probably not indicative of its true value.

  • Sorry to jump in the middle of this but I figured Jeff wouldn't mind because we are all interested in helping each other here. image

The photos look exactly like the photos for the Vam 4 in the Comprehensive Catalog of Morgan & Peace Dollars 4th edition by Leroy Van Allen and A. George Mallis.

The description from the catalog (which you should buy if you don't have it already, is worth it's weight in go...er silver to VAM collectors) is as follows:

    III2 3 - C3a (Doubled 1-7)
Obverse III2 3 - Doubled 1 and 7 in date. The 1 is doubled at top left as two curved lines well away from 1. The 7 has a dot and short vertical line to left of top left serif. Liberty head profile slightly doubled. Date set further left than normal.

IT IS ON THE SSDC HOT 50 LIST!!! image

I don't have a current price list but will keep looking.

If I only had a dollar for every VAM I have...err...nevermind...I do!! image

The Hot 50 book doesn't have any listed at MS64 but MS63 is listed at 175-225 range. I don't care to speculate what an MS64 might bring.

  • I found a CoinWorldTrends site where the 1887S in MS64 is listed at $800- without a VAM-4 being attributed. I would think your coin being attributed as a TOP 50 would command a significant increase to a serious VAM collector. image

  • MAD4MORGANS thank you for the description. I own the vam book, the top 100 guide, and a few others but not the hot 50 guide. My vam book is the fourth edition and have found that they have either changed numbers or descriptions on some vams which constantly confuses me.
JDSINVA thank you for the pricing
Now if I can just find a way to attribute my 1878 7tf r78 life might be good

I found a CoinWorldTrends site where the 1887S in MS64 is listed at $800

And PCGS has them at $725 or so. But they sell in real life at $450 to $500 based on recent sales.
  • Yeah, I figured you did. image I felt that if I use the VAM Encyclopedia for reference, then I think I should "plug" it somehow for the authors (they are the ones who really did all the hard work). Others who may be reading in might want to get in on the fun (and profit if they're so inclined) and go out and buy one somewhere!! image

In case you (or others) don't know, there have been a lot more updates posted at the Ashmore.com website.

Now what's this about an 1878 7tf Reverse of 78? image

  • have put up threads about it before but got very little in replies. You might even be the only one I got. Bottom of R tripled, leaf above bolls tripled, polished nose, doubled tops of e-p-u-i-b, stars dbld tripled nly thing I am fairly sure about is b2a reverse. it hits on so many vams (obverse) but most show with the b2c reverse and broken r in trust

But Ashmore does have pics, lots of them!! When you go to the VAM update page click on "images for all updated VAMs" It takes forever to load, but more than worth the wait. I'm like you, I'm no good with descriptions, I need picsimage
    Becky
  • yes Becky but they are mostly of all the new clashes which is not what I am looking for at times

  • I passed your pictures on to DorkGirl too. Maybe she can take a look and we can figure out what you have together! image

  • appreciate all the help. maybe next we'll try attributing my 1880 as either vam 23 or 25 but that will be another night. again I do appreciate the help even if it turns out to be nothing that one has driven me crazy.
