I've always had a problem getting the frost on the lettering to show up. This solved it. Thanks to The Mad One!!!!

BTW, Marty got screwed at Target paying $6. I got them at KMart for $4 - including the lamps!

    Works great on proofs, not well on MS coins... I'm also thinking about picking up a bigger one that I can fit a whole proof set under...
    It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

    The diffused lighting is really necessary for shooting proofs like this, and a lampshade is perfect for it. The problem in using this technique for business strikes is that it strips the luster.

    Funny thing, I was just playing around with the idea of Marty's. Came up with a cheap solution. I just coned and taped a plain peice of paper, cut it to size and here is the first result. I need to play with the lights to get it just right.

    Yeah I found this out when I tried to use that method for a few toned Roosies... doesn't work very well at all... the computer paper diffusion works better for that, but I will try the lampshade next time I'm doing some proofs image

    It works pretty good with non-cameo proofs too, even with my inexpensive Kodak Easyshare camera and just 1 reveal lightbulb about a foot away. By the way, my lamp was so cheap that the shade just comes right off the metal three prong thing that attaches it to the lamp. I put the shade back on the lamp when I am finished taking pictures. Also, I'm so cheap that it is the only lamp in the whole room image

    I've gotten it to work with whole intact proof sets too, Only I had to focus on each coin individually under the shade and then make a cut and paste collage. The 92 is still in the original mint proof holder, the 64 is in a Whitman holder.

    That is so true, I went to the Relayer school of coin acquisition!!!

    Oh I once went to one of those coin car washes after it rained and used the brush since there was still suds on it from the prior car washer, and I suded up my car, and then I drove home and to rince off my car I got behind cars and trucks that were splashing rainwater my way, had to change lanes a few times, but I saved $ 1.50image

    Kinda missed it the first time round.

    The lamp shade is a diffuser.

    Maybe a couple 100 watt reveals are the ticket.

    Do the coins look that way in hand or does taking the pics this way make the coin look more appetizing? They do look amazing when photgraphed like this but when buying would like to see what the coin really looks like in hand.

    I have a six year old Ricoh RDC-4300. If your camera does macro, it'll work.

    I'd bet the lampshade trick would be great for toners too, though it would strip the lustre.
