Will "MS70" cleaner remove bag toning?

I have a awesome raw 82 Morgan "DOT 2" variety with rainbow toning. Will MS70 effect the colors if used on the coin? The coin is border 64/65.I am sending it in for grading and want to make sure there is nothing on the coin to hold it back.

  • I used MS 70 on some of my Morgans and it didn't affect the toning at all. It just took off some of the yerars of grime that had built up. It brought out the colors because there was grime on top of it. If you are unsure about it, dilute it down.

I would not recommend dipping these...

  • Don't do it! It will likely have a bad effect on the colors.

Probably Yes - you will likely NOT have a Rainbow toned coin after using MS70. MS70 is a strong base and it WILL change the color of toned coins - best suggestion is to try in on a very inexpensive toned coin 1st -you can find some toned silver proof coins in original Mint cellophane - for the years 1960-64, they are relatively inexpensive ( about $10 or so) - MS70 those coins and see what happens to the toning - they're cheap and if you "ruin" one or 2 it won't matter - If you MS 70 your "awesome raw 82 Morgan with rainbow toning" - it may end up an awesome "White" coin - which if you like 'em blast white, is not so bad. If you like the "rainbow toning, you may be disappointed when you're finished.

    Use acetone for these.
  • Where do you get MS70?
  • I took one of my Morgans that had not been touched by MS 70. I took a picture of it. I then swabbed the reverse quickly with MS 70 then rinsed it off under warm water. I then blotted it and took another picture. This happened in 2 minutes. As you can see, the pictures are virtually identical. The coin is in slightly different positions, making it look slightly different. But I know that the coin looks almost identical - just not quite as dingy. The cotton swab is what came off of the coin.

I think you better not let the kid on the right handle any raw coins.

Why clean it? Are you trying to impress the other coins in the collection? I suggest you leave it alone. However, if your intent on cleaning it I've always had good luck with good old spit and a cottom swab. If nothing comes off, leave it as is. Spit is slightly acidic though so if you do this always wash with water afterwords.

I wouldn't recommend MS70 on toned coins either. I have seen it mess up nice toning.

    distilled instead of tap!

  • ms-70 is not a dip it does not have any acids. it is basically a hard core soap. you do not dip the coin, you just apply a little with a q-tip and rinse. it should not remove the color, it will make the coin shinier and might make the color better. but it is best not to use it in some situations. the surface contamination could be hiding a flaw. also practice on regular change first to make sure the q-tip or whatever material that will contact the coin does not scratch the surface.
  • if i've learned anything here, it's don't clean a coin like that.....i think it looks great...
