W.Eberbach: Lusitania Sinking

Lusitania Sinking, 1915, Cast Iron, 69.20mm. Rare. UNC.

Death Straddles sinking steamship with the inscription "Warned but lighthearted Lusitania." Eberbach signature in exergue. Reverse inscription reads "To the Ignorer of Warning Woodrow Wilson 1916."

This is a little known and scarce Lusitania issue. Eberbach, a contemporary Munich schooler with Goetz, did a series of twelve weltkreig 'Death" medals. I was fortunate to acquire six of them recently and will alternate their images and history between Goetz material.

  • If you had not said that is wasn't Goetz, I would have sworn it was. Very interesting.

He wasn't a student when he made this...he was a contemporary 'Great War' medalist. If interested, try to find a copy (good luck) of Mark Jones' "The Dance of Death, Medallic Art of the Frst World War." Jones outlines the 'Munich School' philosophy, subject matter, and techniques.

  • You found six??? I haven't found one!! image I actually like Eberbach's "Lusitania" medal better than Goetz's. I haven't had any luck with finding that book of Jones' either. I've only come across one on eBay and was seriously outbid on it. The only other one I've located -- on a bookseller's site -- was already sold.

It isn't much of a book, more an enlarged pamphlet than anything...I paid $75 for my copy.
  • That's about the right price for a copy; I hadn't thought to bid so high for a pamphlet ... but I didn't know then what I do know now. image

  • There is still quite a bit of debate about the Lusitania, The germans claimed she was carrying war materials, The British that she was carrying civilians and general cargo only. There was even some speculation at one point that the British actually sunk her to get the USA into the war. I don't remember if the wreck has ever been dived on to establish just which side was telling the truth. It was a grim time with trenches running the length of Europe and no end to the war in sight.

An interesting medal all the same.

The ship was investigated recently and it turns out that the cargo did include fuses and other war materiel.
