decided to narrow down my collection of coins.

I have decided I am going to attempt to collect the morgan dollar set in AU 58 to MS 63 grades!!!! Any tips on where to start?

Thanks,
Brent

  • If you've got the cash...get the hard ones/keys first...93-S, the CCs, 94-P, in fact anything 93-95....

Get the keys first then the common stuff. Keys generally only go up in price. Might as well get them done before worrying about the rest.

That Bowers Morgan book is excellent.

I am thinking about working on Morgan Dollar set but working on Barber half set currently (VG- Full Front & Back Rims) and thinking a Barber Dime and Quarter set should be next on the list. Started with the Halves since I can actually finish that set.

The shear cost of a Morgan Set being the holding back point.

  • make sure your set has some personality....airplanenut's suggestion of collection toners aint a bad idea. Imagine looking thru your finished set and seeing all white or slightly golden toned morgans. Now imagine looking thru a set with some crescent toners, bag toners, album toners, etc...that's personality. Why limit the grades to MS63? There are plenty of affordable MS64 and 5 Morgans out there (common dates). These are just my suggs, ymmv.

You will find that in many cases getting a ms62/63 example will be MUCH easier than finding an au58 [much less a real nice one] of that same date and mintmark. The 79-cc and 93-cc are very scarce in au58 as are the 1896-s 1903-s and 1904-s. These coins in ms 62 or better are hard to find in their own right and will not be cheap if a nice example can be located. The 1892-s will be pricey in au50 or better. Be prepared to spend some serious money as the 92-s and 93-s in au58 will set you back close to $80 K at today's prices.

    Not sure what your timetable is for this venture, but I would be looking at keys and semi-keys and better dates first. That means the 79-cc 89-cc 89-o 91-o 92-o 92-s 93 93-0 93-cc 93-s 94 94-s 95-o 95-s 96-o 96-s 01 02-s 03-s 04-s
I would also be pepared to snatch up any real nice for the grade commons that I happened onto during my search.

  • First want to wish you luck in your goal. I have the same goal too, but financially there will be some I do not get, or have to get in low grades vg 8, f 12. BTW I have some beauties in ms65 or 66 pl that I managed to aquire for very reasonable prices.(ie: sellar's pics were not that good, very little feedback, BIN with the sellar not realizing just what they were listing.) Guess you could say I like to gamble. The Official Red Book of Morgan Silver Dollars is a great start. The book gives a brief history of the Morgan, silver mining, treasury hoards, etc. As of now I have 44 of the 106 I wish to aquire in a average grade of ms63. I have no keys and only 1 semi-key. I've even up graded some coins along the way, Its fun and exciting but warning can be very exspensive and addictive.

working on the Basic Circulation Morgan set myself...with a goal of MS64 +
may take a very long time, but I am patient

My registry set is under "Light of Mars"

would be fun to compete over time, if you wish

Start with a second and possible third stream of income.

While you are waiting, which will be a long, long, time, discover a complex author to enjoy as you wait for those "best deals" on the keys. May I suggest James Joyce or perhaps Franz Kafka . . . who will seem oddly appropriate for your task.

Seriously, buy the keys first (of course, this assumes that you already own the appropriate references on the series so you educate yourself as the appropriate first step).

Be careful on how you define "best deals" . . . since a few of your coins will be pieces of opportunity and you many not get that many changes at the right coin for your set. Morgans are so popular that "killer deals" rarely surface on the key coins.

    Best of luck . . .

I'm listing some green label Morgans with Heritage for their Internet auctions. Some of these are MS63 and are coming on line in the next couple of weeks. I also have some that I have not listed. I can post the 'green labels' over the weekend that I have left.
