Well, I saw it earlier when it was still at the $500 level. Either the image is unnaturally dark or I'm surprised that it's a true 66. Terner's MS66 specimen brought about $1200 or so, and NEN had one listed at $1600+ a few months back. I'll check later on these pops, but 52/53 are more plentiful than other dates at these levels.....more later.....the wifey needs to check her email......
OK. I checked the Terner/Goldberg sale from last year, and lot 2094 (1853 Florin) brought $1092.50. Unfortunately, their appears to be no image at this time on their site.
FWIW, PCGS has so far certified a total of 74 Florins graded at MS63 or higher;
MS63 = 21 MS64 = 30 MS65 = 11 MS66 = 11 MS67 = 1
PCGS has certified a total of three MS66 dated 1852, and two dated 1853. The only other date with more than one listed at MS66, is 1873.
The poor, wee mousie only has three florins; 1852, 1853, and an 1870........ 1870 was a very good year!!
A lovely piece in any case. Does it seem to you that the "Liteside infection" of pricing by the sl@b rather than the coin has begun in earnest with Darkside material?

There are those who need third party confirmation that they should like a certain piece.

Interesting comment... I am not sure it is an issue of liking the coin as much as it is liking it for the grade and the price tag associated with that grade. Perhaps the times are changing with respect to certain types of high grade darkside coins...

Speaking for myself only, the third party confirmation is useful.
There is an absolute rash of hairlined/cleaned coins being sold as UNC and I am fed up with it. Few ever indicate the coins are hairlined when selling. Even fewer have pictures that show hairlines. That's reason enough for me to have the confirmation. Of course, I have to like the coin first.
