NO. I refuse to subscribe to the complaints of those who have not joined the 21st century.

Edited to add: ER, I LOVE your sigline coins...and personally I wish your images were MUCH larger! image

Agreed. The sig lines should stay - they add a touch of personality to posts, and are great space for free advertising! image (Also, some of them are hilarious!)

How about if the pictures are taken out of sig lines? or at least kept smaller? Some of us are on dial up. I don't mind waiting for coin pics thoughimage. mike

That would be fine with me.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

" NO. I refuse to subscribe to the complaints of those who have not joined the 21st century"

I am personally on DSL, but resent your and others' remarks about what kind of connection people have. As stated on some other threads, there are a multitude of reasons as to why people don't have a fast connection.

How about if someone tells you what kind of car to drive, or what phone service to use?

I'm also tired of seeing huge pictures of albino rats, cars, etc. It's ludicrous when the post uses up 36 square inches of space and the only "content" is an emoticon.

The board is obviously unmoderated in this respect.

  • For what it's worth, here are my suggestions for a compromise to this problem. 1) PCGS needs to restrict the size, just like they do with author icons. 2) Limit the amount of pictures to one or two, instead of your entire collection. 3) Keep the pics coin related.
Now, feel free to flame away!!
  • It has been explained numerous times how easy it is to filter these offending things out, but some people still seem to have this "do as I want" agenda.

Some people obviously have the incessant urge to hear themselves talk!

ChiefBob, you state:How about if someone tells you what kind of car to drive, or what phone service to use?

I ask:How about if someone tells you what you may or may not have in your sig line?
  • I agree. Limit the size and number and let those who must "post away." My machine is supersonic speed, but the large pics are annoying. My point o-two's worth.

I know on icon upload day, there is a statement on the page stating the uploaded image should be no more than 100 pixels x 100 pixels and no larger than 10K in size yet I've seen some that clearly are beyond this requirement. I've never seen any such requirement for SIG images or images of posted coins et al. If there are specific rules to this, then I'll gladly oblige. I've made a good attempt to keep my SIG images small in kilobyte size and believe mine is less than 25K. But if that is not small enough, then I can trim it down some more.

I think one aspect of the problem is those that link their images from their own web host rather than uploading it PCGS. Some of these connections are slow, even to those of us with a broadband connection. I personally enjoy the SIG images. It adds to the poster's online personna and gives you an idea of their collecting interests.

Sigs should stay but have pics that fit the forum guidelines of 400x200 max size and no more than 20kb.
  • You can go to your personal settings and turn off images in sigs for yourself
    if you want.

That is an all or nothing switch. It doesn't just affect sigs.
  • Maybe we can request that they have a switch for sigs only.

I agree- if the sig lines were kept under 200x200( multiplied equals 40,000) with no moving or flashing stuff to distract when trying to read posts it would be fine. All you have to do to find the size is right click on someones photo and click on properties. For example LeeG's photo's in his sig line equals 86,520 - and that's over double what the rules say. Not picking on you Lee- your photo's were just thereimage. mike

    agreed

I'm guessing that prior to the 100x100 10k rule for avatars, there was either no rule or it was bigger and these giant avatars that you see were uploaded at that time. The avatars that are obnoxious and throw the table out are annoying.

I agree with Bustman. In the past, I have violated all three of these rules, but if the community agrees with the above, I think all parties would be satisfied. I would also emphasize my interest in keeping the content coin-related. If I want to look at babes in lingerie, I will go to a "babes in lingerie" forum. Same with cars, football players (gulp--I had them in my sig line when the Steelers were in the playoffs), etc.
  • All I see here is each and every person having their personal version of what they think should be allowed!
  • Did any of you read what I wrote in the other thread? You can ban any -- I say again, any -- sigline image you wish. Just install a real browser, Firefox, and use the Adblock feature. You can ban ALL sigline images, just certain sigline images, no sigline image, any ad, flashing banner (like the PCGS banner), any graphic -- ANYTHING that annoys you can be blocked.

This is such a simple solution, and the most effective. Do people freaking listen around here?

Actually, Sequitur, I did not read the thread. Maybe you could start a thread entitled "How to block sigline photos with Firefox". I will gladly read it and follow instructions.

YES, I did read what you wrote....over & over & over....and I responded. Apparently YOU didn't read, or care to read my response. So I'll say it again. I do not like using firefox. I have had problems using it on my mac. For those who DO NOT like firefox, what do you suggest????

Wow! This adblock thing is terrific. Tired of looking at someone's cat? Ping! It's gone! (I will surely get a PM about that remark later).

  • << <i>I just posted the original sigline rule post here! Read it! >>

So is that 200x400 rule the exact dimension size or can it be 100x800 or some variation thereof (i.e. is it the area or the dimensions)?

  • I don't have a problem with sig lines as long as they are within reason.

Some have definately gotten out of hand and others are just plain stupid.

A feature to turn them off would be nice, I like some of them here and there, but for the most part I wouldn't miss them if they were gone.

Busty, I did read and consider your question, but my response is, admittedly, a lame one. There is a solution -- you can block anything you want at the IP level. But it requires a bit more in the way of steps and technical proficiency, may even require a router for you, and frankly, I'm not exactly sure how to accomplish it with an Apple PC. So I'm thinking about an easy solution for Mac users. It's a tough one, since I don't use Macs. Still thinking.

Wow! This adblock thing is terrific.

Yup. Other ways to do it, but Firefox absolutely rocks because of simplicity and you can eliminate anything. All annoying sig images? Gone. Advertisements from the Wall Street Journal and NYT? Gone. Annoying Flash ads? Eliminated.
