Does PSA really slab trimmed cards like this?

OK, I tried to read up at the PSA web-site and could not find what I was looking for.

Does PSA still do this?

PSA Authentic Mantle

I'm really confused. I didn't think PSA slabbed "doctored" cards, although I wouldn't really consider this one "doctored", just well used.

Sorry if this has been discussed before. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Why would PSA put "TRIMMED" on the slab?

  • The PSA Grading Standards say that it will not grade trimmed cards. I don't think a grade of "0" is the same as not grading it.

I believe that for some of the ultra high end cards PSA will slab cards as "authentic" so long as they believe the alteration was done by someone a long time ago and without the intention of fraudlently improving the card. If you find an authentic Honus Wagner that had the border cut off with a scissors in 1912, PSA will likely grade it as authentic. That's probably what happened here.

  • Here's what the PSA website says about it:

According to the PSA Certification Database, certification number 90361904 is defined as the following:

    CARD INFORMATION
    Year: 1952
    Brand: TOPPS
    Player: MICKEY MANTLE
    Variety: TRIMMED
    Grade: N0

It is good business for PSA to authenticate trimmed cards, so they'll continue to do it. I think it's a good idea. As usual though, Levi prices things too high.

The site of that makes me cry. I just hope it happened long ago and not someone who slipped up trying to trim now lol

I HAVE A AUTHTIC TRIMED JIMMY BURKE T206 THAT CAME BACK TRIMED NO GRADE?? WHY NOT AUTHNTIC TRIMED THEY SAID IT WAS AUTHNTIC!

That's my point. The seller calls it a "PSA 0 'AUTHENTIC' graded card." PSA doesn't list an "authentic" grade that I've seen, but they say they don't grade trimmed cards. It's not a graded card. It's an ungraded, but apparently authenticated card. I don't see any problem with it, either, I just wasn't aware that PSA did that. It doesn't make any difference, since the tag is shown in the scan. Just a question of semantics.

I guess this is the question which I'd like to see answered. Where does it say that PSA will slab a trimmed card? And if so, how does it determine which ones are "valuable" enough, and which ones are returned unslabbed?
  • they should "authenticate" any card. not just for high profile dealers. your card should have been slabbed as authentic.

I spoke with PSA regarding a 1933 Sport Kings Red Grange I had that was trimmed, but authentic. They also wouldn't slab it with an Authentic designation. The story I was told is that in VERY RARE circumstances with HIGH PROFILE cards they will encapsulate a trimmed or otherwise altered card with an Authentic designation. A '52 Mantle fits the bill, apparently a '33 Red Grange and a T206 Jimmy Burke don't.
