1804 Coronation Jeton - Cheap and Common

This is an example of one of the Lauer jetons produced in anticipation of Napoleon's coronation. It has the incorrect date of
November 23, 1804 instead of December 2, 1804 when it actually occurred. This was because the aging Pius VII took his own
sweet time crossing the Alps in winter (understandable actually) and they announced or planned a total of five different dates
between November 9 and December 2! One of Joesphine's biographers describes her in tears after the third postponement as
the pressure was starting to get to her.

Bramsen 325 - 25mm
Even though these were made of brass the picture is a very accurate reproduction of its actual color. At first I thought it was a
copper piece (unheard of!) but close examination of the southeast quadrant of the obverse shows some brass color peeking
through. The Lauer pieces are actually more common than the coronation medals thrown to the crowds on December 2 and
shouldn't set anyone back more than $10.
I think Napoleon looks like someone gave him a cauliflower ear!
