I was afraid of this - Lincoln grades are in

Well, I finally went through multiple rolls of 1963-D cents and picked out the very best for submission.
I would have bet they all were 65s with a shot at 66 for one or two.
Looks like I need to learn some more about the subtlies of grading high(ish) end cents.

Submission #3249382

Comments? Maybe I should have a 64RD giveaway.

  • 63-d is way way tough! I've found several ms67's from the 60's now, but I don't think I've even found an ms65 63-d yet.

Go ahead and give them away. There are lots of young kids out there that can't afford to buy stuff so in order to inspire new collectors, just give a few away to the YN's out there. I just gave away a bunch of Liberty head nickels, Buffalo nickels and some Wheat Lincolns and it made me feel good to know someone will take over for me.

    Ben,

Even though I'm not a Lincoln guy... from most of the other threads I've read, it looks like you're only 1 point lower than PCGS is... someone else said this before in other threads... just remember that next time and you'll be fine!

    Did somebody say GIVEAWAY?

  • If you ever get any pcgs 66's for 63d, name your price. Only 28 ever graded, and if a 67 ever is, $10,000 may not take it at auction. How's that for incentive to keep looking? I know I am.

  • I would love a nice MS64 red Lincoln. I dont personally think there is anything wrong with a nice MS64red I would give a very nice home with all my other non slabbed Lincolns. Encluding the first Lincoln I dug with the aid of my metaldetector.

Make sure you are watching the steps on those. The steps have to be completely struck up for anything higher than 64.

  • Yes. As I was going through rolls of the 1963-Ds (with no real grading experience), I quickly came to realize that the steps were the best indication of a good strike. I'll be interested to see if I can determine the difference in the 64 and the 65. Maybe something holding them back slightly was the luster. They all graded RD, but they weren't the perfect bright orange-red that you see on some high grades.

I'll see when they get back.

Thanks for the tips (and the OUCH).

I just bought 11 rolls of '63 D's in an ugly penny deal. Now I suppose I'll have to look at them. The value is a good motivator, but it's almost outweighed but the scaricity factor. I'll give them 20 minutes.....
