I got a nice surprise from PCGS today in the mail

I got my quarterly freebie 1865 3 cents back today with the extra designation "Mint Error" "Clashed dies" on the insert which I was not expecting. Thanks ---------------------------------------------------BigE

Must have been a very STRONG clash???

Because I think you'd have a tougher time finding an 1865 that was NOT clashed than finding a run-of-the-mill clashed coin. image

I am sure the press went "thud" before this one was made. Wonder if they had to feed the blanks by hand on three centers around the Civil War. Anyone know?-------------------------BigE

i just had a nicely toned 1865 3CN post at MS62 which also showed strong clash on the obverse and very weak/non-existent numeral lines from overpolishing.

  • Since so many of these had some evidence of die clash I chose one with an obvious clash. Is yours more or less obvious than this one?

    Cool clash, Carl.

    I assume BigE's coin is a 3cN?

Carl, mines a liberty head, it was the freebie for two types the same year. Maybe just a bit more though, not much, that's why I was surprised-----------------BigE

  • Sorry, I assumed you meant a silver 3 cent coin. I saw so many clashed 3 cent silvers that is what popped into my mind.
  • BigE,

    That's way cool!

PCGS did a similar thing for me on a coin. The only problem was that it also came back with an "error cert number" and it wouldn't let me register the coin.

The error was a struck-thru on an 1865-S $5 Cornet, probably grease, that caused some of the outside letters to look weakly struck.

What does is cost now for an error submission? $40, I think?
