Need VAM Help on 1878-P 7TF C reverse

I'm trying to identify this 1878-P 7TF Morgan with a C reverse. I bought it because of some serious die gouges. Unfortunately most went away after the third acetone soak. It was just grime. The coin was and still is very dirty.

LIBERTY is doubled on the left. There is a die scratch running along the bottom of LIBERTY and off to the right of the Y.
There is the remains of a gouge through her hair. It looked like it started above the cotton bolls, goes through the lower leaves, cap, and hair.
How many C reverses have a double LIBERTY?

  • What type of ear does this coin have?

I almost said "a left one", but I'll try to remain serious.
This is a type II I think.

EDIT: Just noticed.... it isn't a die scratch under LIBERTY. It's just an ugly scratch. It's raised because the scratch is angled and lifted some metal.

I've looked through my updates and see no mention of any with doubled LIBERTY. v228A does mention a vertical die gouge near the cotton bolls. Do you think that could be the one?

  • It's hard to make out any details. The coin is very worn. I need to avoid buying these types of coins... just can't ever pass up an $8 deal.
Don't see any lines as described for the v228. It mentions a "broken fourth right star". This is different than the broken point on the 4th right star found on the 78-S, right? I noticed a slight flaw in the 4th right star. Not sure if that's what the description is referring to. The only other thing I noticed is a faint vertical gouge inside the B of LIBERTY (left side). I think I'll soak it in acetone again and check it later. Thanks (as always) for your help.

  • A "broken" right star normally has a tip chopped off.

$8- Doen'st sound too bad a cost to try to "cherry pick". The cost of silver is getting close to $8- an ounce. Not too bad unless you paid some outrageous shipping charges to get it.

  • No shipping costs. It came from an antique mall that is right next door to my bank (not always a good thing). I was told the coins are coming from an ex-dealer (someone that once had a shop).

Yeah. I try to stop by at least once a week and go through the tellers' drawers (don't go there) looking for Wisconsin D quarters.
