Collecting cars and coins

VetterVetter Posts: 850 ✭✭✭✭✭
I just started collecting coins (Buffalo Nickels), but I have always loved cars. Any one else have a older collector car hidden away in their garage? Lets see what you have.

  • There's a few car enthusiasts around... JBSteven's had a nice classic Mustang... image Two guys on my street have some older Mustangs... one's a Black '70? Mustang... I don't know the year... one guy told me it was a 3-year range, because the same body style was used 3 years in a row, so it's like a '70, '71 or '72... I think... the other guy has an Olive Green Mustang of the same year range that he drives around, but he has a Blue with Gold Trim Mach 1 in the Garage, never seen it out, and no clue on the year...

I've got a "collector car". A 93 Camaro z/28 which collects dust, scratches, dings..........etc. image
It used to collect "O-o-o's and A-h-h-h's" but no more!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!
  • Here's my '66 Mustang GT.....

Yep it's a little small and I don't have batteries for it right now.

But one day, I'll take it out for a spin.....

None currently since I don't own a garage, but I've always been an old car and street rod nut. My dad was a car buff and drag racer in the late 50s (anyone know the name Grumpy Bill Jenkins?) and when I was a teenager we worked on several rides together -- a 40 Ford sedan with an old flathead in it, a 37 Chevy business coupe, and a 29 Model A 2 door sedan that the old man still drives. I sold my 74 Nova when I went to college and haven't replaced it -- but one day I will!

There are a lot of folks that are into coins and cars. A friend of mine who is a former Hershey Grand Champion has one of the finest paper money collections around, and plenty of other folks share both hobbies.

I wonder if people who think that coins should all be in little plastic holders agree that trailered cars suck? Ironic, if so!

1967 Imperial convertible, 1968 Newport convertible, 1975 Camero, 1981 Monte Carlo hard top, 2004 Malibu Sedan. The Imp has 23,000, The 68 Newport has 32,000, the rest are for driving. Used to have more but health has made me get rid of a few. Soon more to go. To old to work on those old things. Can't get parts and when I do they cost more than for a new car. My next door neighbor has 2 Cadys, 1 Lincoln, 1 pickup, 1 bus, 1 camper, 1 harley bike and is looking for more.

I drive mine every day, rain or shine.

I couldn't stand to have it and only drive it once in a while.

  • When I graduate from college, my dad will give me around $12-$13k towards a car... debating on a new Mustang... or a classic... image Probally end up with a New Mustang, and maybe once I get more into working, I'll be able to get myself a Classic, too image

Don't mess with old cars ulnless you are a mechanic, know one, can get parts cheap and easy, have lots of time on your hands, invest lots of money that you may not ever get back, have a heated garage, etc.

To not lose money in the car game it is usually wise to buy a nice car in the best condition you can afford: "buy it done." Or "let someone else restore the car" then you buy it.

In the past 12 years I had owned the following cars (now all gone).
It wasn't chance as to where the name "roadrunner" came from.

      1968 GTX convertible 4 speed 440
1969 GTX hardtop automatic 440 (2 of them)
      1969 Superbee 383 automatic
      1969 roadrunner convertible 383
      1969 roadrunner hardtop 383 - 4 speed
      1970 Challenger RT - 440 six-pack, shaker hood
1970 Dodge Coronet RT convertible 440

I bought a ‘48 Plymouth Special Delux (4 dr sedan) about 20 yrs ago, and had it for about 10 year (I did a minor restore).

I found about 15 Wheaties and two Mercurys inside the backseat upholstery. All common dates, but still pretty cool. Huge car --- man, if only that back seat could talk!

Old cars rule; too bad they take up so much damn room.

The first and probably the last one that will be built. Did not find any coins in this one but found a hand full of silver in others that were parted out. Checking for coins is always the first thing done.

My 1st car was actually more of a great piece of furniture than a collectors' item: black 1960 Cadillac convertible. It ran and was worth every penny of the $250 I paid for it before I had a drivers license. My dad made me sell it back two months later.

I owned a 1962 Studebaker GT Hawk all through college. I guess a coin collector could say that one was in VF-30 or XF-40 shape. I paid $1300 for it redid the upholstery for another $350 and had fun driving it around town. I sold it five years later for $2600.

    • Funny you should ask.

      2001? BMW MP 3 ... she's the fast one.

1969 MGB GT ... she's the safe one.

Since November, we've been restoring the MBG GT. Complete restore. Goes in for paint job on the 24th. Going to become the "Shaguar" Yep, the british flag from head to toe.

Here's one for the Brits! The MG is the most sold sports car in America to date.

Nice Pantera . . . you gotta love the Italians and nobody beats Pininfarina.

No pictures of my weekend car handy . . . but it's all an original 1978, marrone metallic with a chocolate interior and the plate reads "308 GTB" . . . and of course, designed by Pininfarina and built by Scaglietti.

      Gotta go drive!

      << <i>THE Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins? >>

I went back and re-read my post, which sure does make it look like I meant my dad = Grumpy Jenkins. Mea culpa. My dad and him (2 different people) ran together ca. late 1950s to mid 1960s out of shop in Malvern, PA. Dad drove a Grumpy-tuned 58 Impala and learned enginecraft from him as a young punk. He later opened up an automotive shop that he ran until the mid 80s.

So, to further clarify, Grumpy was Dad's mentor, but not my father (as far as I know, at least ...)

I'm glad to know I'm not the only guy that recognizes his name around here though -- very cool! I guess you can be a motorhead and a coin geek at the same time.
