Am I nuts regarding Heritage auctions and their ZOOM feature?

I think i'd be comfortable spending 2 or 3 thousand dollars on a coin based on the look i can get at the coin using this feature.

Am I too trusting in this feature?

This halfdime looks awesome on even the 3rd or 4th click of zooming in and that's DARN SMALL coin to begin with.

Heritage pictures really aren't very good. The zoom works well to get a large picture, but you can't see the flaws on the coins surfaces that well. I've been frequently disappointed in a coin I purchased from Heritage. Especially when comparing the picture to the actual coin.

I hate the stupid zoom feature. In fact, I have it turned off. It just shows little tiny chunks of the full large picture. It's a gimmick.

Despite their large volume and profits, Heritage is still unable to provide state of the art photos. When they do, I'll buy from them again, and consign some of my coins. Sorry, fancy computer gimics don't do it for me right now!

What's "the gimmick". To me it's a coin picture and you can zoom in on it. Someone shed light here for me before i do something stupid.

A number of coins I've recieved didn't show thin hairlines no matter how much I "zoomed in". If the hairline or abrasion isn't on the original image to start, absent a good verbal/written discription, I'm very reluctant to bid anymore there. Others are quite happy with the images, just not the best they could do, in my opinion.

I totally agree with Morgannut especially about consigning coins. If they had photos by some of the people here it would certainly bring in more eyeballs and undoubtedly higher bids....Mike

I agree, Heritage has got a long way to go with imaging. However, I find them to be very accomodating about sending coins to me for viewing prior to the auction. I use the pics find 4 or 5 pieces that don't have any obvious problems then have them send the lots to me. I agree with others on this thread that it is probably not wise to spend several thousand dollars on a coin that you haven't seen in person.

I'll take another tack here and say that I love the zoom feature. I find it invaluable in identification of coin varieties and condition. I have seen real flaws using this feature. The pictures of coins are sometime poor (but its hard to take an accurate picture), the zoom feature helps.

Unfortunately like others have stated it is just a closer image of a bad pic.

Heritage really needs to do something about their photo quality.

okay, okay...thats a poor picture. The whites are so blown out I can see anything either. Usually they're not that bad.

i like the zoom feature of the photos and also the pops ngc/pcgs and also the values they give with regard to numismedia /coin world values/ CU

but if i had a collection of wonderfully toned coins with great eye appeal and/or deeply mirrored deep/ultra cameo pre 1943 proof coins to sell at auction heritage would NOT be on the A list for consideration due to the less than desirable photos that are presented of wonderfully toned and/or great eye appeal coins
