Is this real? Looks kind of crude, but interesting. This seller has a LOAD of nice coins going off this week.image

I do not know these coins well at all but I am a little suspicious. If it is real, the doubling is interesting.

What do people think about the denticles and the "mei" in "meiji?"

Heavy tooling marks on the top right of the flag, and a doubling in the opposite direction on the flower, makes me wonder.image

I think you mean Japanese not Chinese:

  • The "enlarge" function isn't working for me, so I can only rely on the basic pictures, but when I looked at it before reading any of the comments, I concluded that it was either genuine, or an extremely well done counterfeit. The diot at the bottom of the side with the denomination (Krause and the JNDA disagree about which side is obverse and which is reverse) is in the correct position for the more common "high dot" version. The Krause value the seller attributes is for that version.

<< <i>What do people think about the denticles and the "mei" in "meiji?" >>

Actually, that "vertically squished" "mei" counts in favor of genuineness. The drawings in the JNDA catalog (p.7, coins 01-5 and 01-5A) show the same thing on the 1871 coin, and a more normal character on the slightly smaller 1874-80 coins.

After reviewing this feedback I may consider bidding myself.image

Neither those marks nor the apparently doubled denticles on the left, and badly worn(?) denticles on the right were apparent to me on the small pictures. (I still get nothing when I click to enlarge them.)

Neither Japanese Coinage by Jacobe & Vermuele, nor Modern Japanese Coinage by Cummings, has anything useful to say about those issues. Sure wish I could see the actual coin before putting any bucks at risk.image

I've not seen much of the gold yens in person so I can't say from personal experience. The pictures look strange to me though and I'd not bid.

Did someone say it was Chinese?

The denticles look so "squished" as to raise a big red flag. Without researching gold one yen coins and having a genuine coin to compare the photos with, I would not bid.
