superlative blue toned proof indian cents in upcoming goldberg long beach sale/what do you think?

i see that goldberg has some outstanding blue colored-toned proof indian head cents in their upcoming long beach auction

for me..........
to get mostly even blue color on both sides is truly rare and extremely beautiful on an indian head cent in proof

no they are not my coinsimage

but i do think these blue toned proof coins are rarer than and more beautiful than average proof red indians in the same grades

it would be great to get a proof set of a blue colored toned all proofs and gem grade from the 19th century
two cent piece
indian head cent
half cent
large cent
three cent nick
lib nick

the indian is a great start

these blue proofs are envelope toned and i have seen some proof indians before like this as they all have the same look and secondary coloration again from being stored in envelopes for many decades

here is a copy and paste link

The time to buy them was 5 years ago - getting pricey now.

  • PCGS needs a new designation for proof IHCs! BL for Blue! I like them... They are more expensive then the reds so far and I'm a buyer that way too...

You'll find very few in PCGS holders. Almost all are NGC.

Many of these blue toned Indian Cents com from the "Proskey Hoard". David U. Proskey was a dealer from the late 1870's to the 1920's (or longer). He and a few other dealer/collectors would buy all the minor proof sets from the Mint at the end of the year for face value (The Mint loved this). They accumulated hundreds of Cents, 3-cent Nickels and 5-cent Nickels in proof.

Years later some were sold to Wyate Raymond and some (maybe the same ones) found their way to Tatham Coin Co. in the 1940's. By this time they had aquired their vivid blue toning. Tatham Coin ran ads in the 1940's offering "Irridecent proof Indian Cents".

During the late 1980's when PCGS and NGC were getting their feet wet, they would encounter these vividly toned coins and reject them as AT. The the Eliasberg sale came and guess what? There were more irridescent proof Indian Cents. PCGS and NGC both started slabbing them.

By the way, "Lake" is right, five years ago I was asking RB money for these blue coins in BN holders. Now they're beyond RD money.

Michael - I used to own the 1905, it's a Moose! Toughest coin I've ever tried to photo. As usual Goldberg did a good job capturing the color but at the expense of the mirrors. It also has a lot more deep red than the image shows.

My feeble attempts to image the obverse, I could only nail the lower portion.

    Eagleeye, shylock, etal,

Nice job on the date of that 1905, and thanks for the Proskey bit....ah, to have bought these lovely proofs directly from the mint!!! imageimageimage

I had a proof 1884 back in the early 1980s which was a dead ringer for the tone of that 1881. BTW, I term thse as IR (Iridescent Rainbows) in my inventory. I have several British coppers/bronzes which have predominant "blues" on those hard prrof surfaces.

Were the Proskey coins wrapped in some type of tissue papers or just envelopes of some type? image

Received Goldberg's catalog today and looked through the Indians and Morgans, they have really put together a nice presentation of the coins with outstanding photos.

Was sad to hear about the passing of Michael Magdic. He was about my age and I had a few dealings with him at Eagle Eye. He was a kind and honest person, we did allot of talking on the phone and he would stop by our table and say hi at the shows. There is a nice write up about his life in the front of the catalog.

I have an 1885 NGC PR66 that has a lot of blue into purple on it, but I cannot photograph it for anything! Any suggestions? Here are pictures of my attempts...

The last picture shows the mirros and the blue the best, but the rest are not even close to what the coin looks like. So much mroe blue and very mirrored fields.

    - Yes, Mike was a great guy. very picky, but arn't all great collectors?

    - The toning on the cents in the Proskey hoard came from the original Mint wrappers. This comes down from the earlier generation of numismatists - I have never seen original Mint wrappers from the 1880-1900's. Anyone seen 'em?

    - To get the color to pop on the toned coins (labeled BN) I use an ott light to bring out the color and halogen light to bring out the luster/mirrors better.
