Your Opinion on toughest GSA Dollar in High Grade to Locate

7over87over8 Posts: 4,733 ✭✭✭
All -

Since I am new to this forum, I am taking my first crack at starting a new topic.

I have been acquiring GSA CC dollars over the past 20 years and have an opinion about the toughest dates to locate in high grade.

I would like to hear the opinion of the forum.....

My choices are the 79CC GSA (Cap Die) in any grade, 78-CC GSA in 65 or higher, and those 90-CC's have always eluded me in any grade.......

Excluding PL's and DMPL's, based on numbers of coins in high grade in my collection, I'd have to list the 91-CC first, the 90-CC a close second......and it would be a close race for third between the 79-CC Capped Die and the 80CC/rev 78.

I've got a capped die that will grade MS66, and and 80CC/rev78 that I believe would grade MS67. They're both head and shoulders above any other examples I've ever seen.

Thinking about this a little more, GSA GUY is absolutely right on when he mentions the 80CCr78. A very tough coin in 65 and above. In fact, I found a 80CCr78 in 65 before I could locate a 80CC in 65.

As for the 90CC, when these were routinely trading in the $200 range (a number of years ago), I was never offered more than 5 coins over a 5-8 year period. Even at that, the highest grade I've seen is a 63. I bought my 63 from a well known Maryland Dealer.

As for the common dates, my sad story is - I remember passing on nice 64 and 65 common CC's at $40-$45 per 10+ years ago.....!!!!!!!!!! Cherrypicking all the nice coins from lots of 50+ all with boxes and cards / fresh coins. But I bought every 78-CC I could, in the $65-$70 range. Yes, some of them were baggies, but a good buy....

I would think the 1889 CC would be tough since there is only one in any grade.
